This makes the most sense to get resources from the West of Canada to port. Energy East is another option which actually has an existing refinery at the other end. Montreal is another option for a terminating point. There are plenty of places the feds and provinces can work together on getting infrastructure up and running for these projects. Let’s make it happen. Build, build, build.
It’s probably worthwhile to do it, but building a port at Port Nelson will be *hellishly* expensive. The Nelson River discharges a lot of water, and deposits an enormous amount of silt into the bay as a result, so any port building there would require some combination of lots of dredging and/or building an artificial island. Building the roads, railways, and pipelines needed to get there would also be stupidly expensive thanks to the difficulties of building on the Canadian Shield.
And on top of all of that, even with climate change shortening the number of days that Hudson Bay is covered in ice, it’s currently still covered in ice from December to June, so this port would only see real use for less than half a year for a long time. It’s not a bad idea per se, but it’s a *very* expensive one.
A deep water port in the Hudson’s bay might he a pricey endeavour but I believe this is the way forward. It is the best choice to reconcile with prairie provinces and stifle the separatist movement with international trade access that doesn’t step on Quebec’s toes. A great compromise with positives that go beyond internal politics.
On top of the economic benefits it would give us a great reason (among many others) to shore up our right to Arctic trade and build up the icebreaker fleet. That would in theory make a port accessible year round, and although the coast guard is unarmed the spending still contributes to the NATO goal of 2% GDP spent on defence. By actively patrolling and using the Northwest Passage we gain major advantages to our rightful claim and other nations won’t be so keen to attempt to do the same.
It would be a huge cost which no government really wants to spend the money on, but would be one of the largest contributions to building this country and pay dividends in the future as climate change takes hold. A nation building project could be just what’s needed to unify the country and give us a real sense of pride in a major infrastructure accomplishment this century.
The idea is premised on Ontario and Quebec taxpayers paying for it.
If it’s such a great idea, why aren’t O&G and mining companies lining up to invest?
I’m curious what’s cheaper….a deep water port in Manitoba to Hudson’s Bay or a deep water port in Tuktoyuktuk to the Arctic Ocean….
