The US is a deeply racist nation. Without that being true he would never be a thing, and the MAGA movement would have always been irrelevant.

It was always openly the central plank of his election campaign. Anyone who wasn’t already acknowledging it at that time was just doing the “white moderate” thing as per MLK.
