The fact that this article lists ECT beside Lobotomy as examples of inhumane treatment shows how little it understands modern psychiatry. Leaving someone sick on the street to be preyed upon by the worst faction of society is far more inhumane then delivering a well studied and document treatment to depression.
At some point we are going to have to have an adult conversation about capacity, negative externalities, and what “harm reduction” actually means and should entail.
We do not allow seniors with dementia to choose their own treatment, if they receive it at all, and allow them to wander the streets aimlessly to freeze to death or be a threat to themselves or others.
Some drugs like meth and fentanyl irreversibly damage your brain and destroy your ability to look after yourself. Allowing them to freeze in the streets and harm themselves and others is not progressive or moral. It’s terrible.
It also should not be the duty of law abiding citizens to put up with unpredictable and erratic behaviors of people high on god-knows-what while they are trying to get to work or school, or go about their day. Our current approach had led to massive externalities on the general population and at a certain point, enough is enough.
I have an open mind on involuntary treatment. Will it make them stay clean? At a certain point who cares, the controlling question should be does it make society safer. Having said that, I do not believe we should go down this road until we have enough treatment capacity for everyone who wants it first.
They don’t have the resources to even do it so it doesn’t really matter. If they can’t carry it out it doesn’t matter what the court orders.
This is all just rhetorical window dressing to justify forcibly confining addicts off the street and out of the public eye for 6 months at a time since the legal system can’t do the job and society doesn’t want to fix the root causes.
