I hear everyday both the Democrats abandoned trans people and that their biggest mistake was making everything about trans people and not doing anything else.
It is almost like both of these positions are blatant fucking lies, and both arguments are being supported by people taking comments out of context in order to support these two ridiculous fucking extreme positions that are incompatible as hell.
The reality is that Democrats continue to support trans people but not very openly or loudly, instead trying to talk about other issues. Which is a middle ground position that isn’t going to make anybody particularly happy but is not remotely the same as either of the two extreme nonsensical positions being presented as reality.
Fuck all of that stupid ass noise and the people spreading that noise in order to defend the Nazis currently throwing human beings into death camps with no due process.
Yes, we should defend trans people but focusing on these bullshit cultural issues is a losing game for Dems. We need unite the working class by talking non-stop about economic issues.
If trans people stopped existing, rent will still be too high. If everyone became cool with trans people tomorrow, wages will still be too low. If every cultural war was resolved, healthcare would still be too expensive. These are issues that impact 98% of the population and it should be easy to unite people behind it
I’m trans and greatly appreciate Governor Walz and his clear allyship when the waters are turbulent. This said, here’s what I think he’s onto a winning position for the Democrats and here’s what I’d add….
*Trans people simply want to live a life much like everyone else does. We’d like to go to work, go to school, shop, eat, go to a movie, etc. and really not have to focus on the fact that we’re trans. We’d like to go to a doctor and not have to run the care plan through Bobby Kennedy. We’re not asking for acceptance, but we’d like to be free from getting fired or denied renting because we’re trans. And we’d prefer that the governing bodies of various sports be allowed to determine eligibility based on a wide variety of factors that balance competition and participation. We’re not asking for your approval, just as you’re not asking for ours.*
What we are right now for the right is a stand-in for people who think the American culture is in decline. It is, but we’re not the cause and trying to eradicate our existence isn’t the solution. We don’t need the Democrats protection and we’d prefer not to be the focus. A big part of being trans is actually not having that be the focus of our lives. But here we are. Rushing to protect us isn’t the answer either. A „how about we just move along and leave them be,“ in my view, would be both really helpful and an effective political strategy.
Trans people are .6% of the population. The should be a footnote on any election. There are other issues that affect a hell of a lot more people.
Republicans used this as a marching cry…. And it worked. Trump won. And the took over both houses.
Don’t ignore trans folks but also DON’T make them front and center.
They don’t need to be a prop and a target for the party.
Literally all you have to do is frame it from a libertarian perspective, as Tim Walz did in the campaign. Privacy. Choice. Freedom. Mind your own damn business.
Denying Human rights to humans is a mistake.
Democratic consultants are so obsessed with polling and splitting hairs on specific issues that they completely lost the plot on actually having values.
For example, refocus on simple concepts (and in this proposal, also take back the words Republicans corrupted):
Freedom – to speak, to read, to be the person you want to be
Life – health care, living wages, worker protections, work-life balance, a clean environment
Justice – anti-corruption, neutering the oligarchs, meaningful reforms, accountability
You sit on a bus, with one man next to you, and one man in the back. A man in a suit boards the bus, goes to the back, and starts punching the man in the back. Your neighbor then realizes his wallet has been stolen.
When you try to tell the besuited man to stop punching the man in the back, your neighbor says “Hey! Don’t you care that my wallet was stolen! We should find that first!”
The besuited man stole your neighbor’s wallet.
Tim Walz is correct.
He got momentum behind him when he started calling them ‚Weird‘ and that started hitting home and the GOP was becoming unglued.
Then the DNC muzzled him, the way they do Bernie, and both Kamala and Walz fell in line behind what market tested, milquetoast „Middle of the Road“ „Ruffle no feathers“ „What polls well with middle American white moms“ focus groups told them.
Guess what happened. They lost. Like they lost in 2016, and probably would have lost in 2020 if not for the pandemic and chaos and swelling hate for Trump in that exact moment. And the losing losers who lose are still in their offices, making campaign plans to lose more elections, preaching „Stay the course“
If I failed at my job for 15 years, I’d be out on my ass. Must be nice to have that kind of job security.
If Dems can’t defend the civil rights of one of the groups that most consistently votes for them with their full chest… why wouldn’t they hedge and compromise on the civil rights of other groups? The answer is they would.
At least, that’s how it feels as a transgender person. Like our dignity, our humanity and right to equal participation and protection as citizens is under attack… and the overall political response is „Oof… you’re too yucky for normal Americans. Sorry, we sort of support you, but we won’t do it loudly. Can you just be polite and quiet and maybe we can reverse some of these laws?“
At the same time the GOP are calling us pedophiles, insane, and a danger to women. It really kills trust in the party when they make you feel like an unwanted step-child. Oh but, we better go vote for them! Because they might defend us maybe!
Obviously not all Dems are like that, there’s thankfully many who DO proudly defend the dignity of ALL Americans, including us. But it just sucks being told my existence is politically inconvenient.
Civil rights pushes like this are important to me as a voter. The people who say that trans people should be ignored because they are a small group are pathetic.
I’m getting really tired of Dems that think that the lesson is „Be just a bigoted, ignorant and hateful as the Republicans“.
You fight for what is right no matter if that is the populist position or not.
Literally the only person I’ve seen take any measure of responsibility for 2024 and tackle the issue head on.
I’m seeing a *lot* of people pointing fingers and placing blame, but few stepping up.
Democrats seem unable to learn. The right is always going to find a wedge issue. Democrats need to learn to neutralize the narrative and refocus on real problems. Instead they always bite the bait.
The only people they should abandon are the consultants
as a trans man, this whole debate has been incredibly annoying, embarrassing, scary. it’s like walking into a room and EVERYONE is talking about you but none of them have any idea what they’re talking about…one side is arguing in “support” of you, some people are blaming you for all of their problems, and another is calling you horrific names. no one at the party bothers to ask your input or thoughts. oh, and the building is burning down around everyone but they keep on talking about you.
But Democrats love throwing minorities under the bus after an embarrassing loss, it’s like their favorite thing
The DNC at this point, while still better than the GOP, are ran by a bunch of soulless corporate fucks. They’re 2 faced slime balls with no convictions who will profess their values from the rooftops and then flip on those values at a moments perceived inconvenience. This is why they’re unlikable and untrustworthy to the public at large. Say what you want about the republicans, but at least they’re consistent. Consistently pieces of evil garbage, but consistent nonetheless
I both agree and disagree with that statement. Morally, it IS a mistake. Politically, its‘ not a bad idea. The Republican spin machine has been extremely effective in making trans people a scapegoat/boogeyman in recent years because homosexuality has become too mainstream to directly assault (bans on marriage, adoption, etc…).
It allows those anti-gay sentiments to be expressed again and its just ‚weird‘ or ‚unusual‘ enough to bother some people who aren’t anti-gay, but still susceptible to fear-based messaging, like the bullsh!t correlation they keep drawing between trans people and pedophiles . I’ve seen a lot of open anti-trans sentiment from people who will probably never meet or have a reason to think about trans people if it weren’t for fear mongerers telling them to.
If Democrats take a strong pro-trans stance, they’ll do what’s right, but lose a lot of votes in the middle for doing so. And pragmatically, winning elections IS the best way to protect trans people (given Project 2025)
Except I know a ton of Democrats that are not supportive of all the trans policies

This issue is simple: frame the debate not around sports, but that trans people have the right to exist.
They just need to figure out how to work “we will be protecting trans people” into a larger message of “using government for good, but keeping it out of your personal life.”
Most people don’t really care about trans stuff.
one of the big things that broke my fuckin heart about 2024 is not getting this actual normal human being as VP.
They’re also a part of the larger voting bloc that the dems forgot to appeal to: the working class.
They were doing so well then they slipped right back into „orange man bad“ and then mumbled their policies.
