“Daniella KanKam-Adu, 19, was offered £250 in return for smuggling £225,000 worth of cannabis from Canada to Newcastle Airport on March 3 this year.”

£250 that is one cheap deposit

    2. God bless women like her. Putting their livelihoods and freedom on the line to get us our cush.

    3. InsideOutOcelot on

The most ridiculous part of this is that we’re a globally leading exporter of medical grade cannabis.

The government deem it okay for private companies to make money off weed, but not for the average joe to buy/sell/consume

Legalisation would take a LOT of money out of gangs and raise a LOT of money in taxes.

    4. Opposite_Orange_7856 on

That’s insane, what kind of deterrent is that to these gangs who exploit these young vulnerable people?

    5. TesticleezzNuts on

Just legalise it and stop wasting taxpayers money policing bullshit.

Country is desperate to save money and make it.

      **WEED**

    6. PerceptionGreat2439 on

      $250 for a deposit on a house?

Also, I just can’t picture a judge saying ‚you wanted the money for a house deposit? I’m glad you mentioned this, you may go free‘.

      >Glenn Gatland, defending, said KanKam-Adu had a difficult childhood and spent time in a care home. He added that before the offence, she discovered she was pregnant and didn’t want the child to experience the same childhood she had.

      >Mr Gatland said the 19-year-old needed money for a deposit on somewhere to live and was ’naive‘ in agreeing to the suggestion of a friend to bring vapes back to the UK.

Bit different than the title represents.

    8. Wow. To be fair, the article really does highlight the differences throughout the world.

    9. Sad_Froyo_6474 on

The unaffordability of mortgages to willingness to smuggle drugs in your bum correlation is probably crazy right now tbf.

    10. Spaceeeeeey on

Fed up of all the sub par weed hitting the UK from USA/Canada/Thailand. Support your local growers.

    11. Fragrant-Reserve4832 on

What a crock of shit. I bet no man would have walked out of that court.

    12. She spent three months in prison (during which she had a miscarriage).

I’m not quite sure that counts as being „spared jail.“

    13. ShondaVanda on

Can we imprison her for her shit negotiation skills? £250 for the risk of JAIL? She shouldn’t be in charge of her own affairs.

    14. VolcanoSpoon on

Surely it’s just easier to smuggle the seeds in and just grow it here in a secure operation instead of passing through security scans etc

    15. BritanniaGlory on

This makes it sound like she was spared jail because she said she was saving for a house deposit.

Convixtions for importation of class B drugs only gets immediate custody 75% of the time, and a suspended sentence 13% of the time, that’s including male offenders. So a suspended sentence ehere isn’t unusual.

She was most likely spared because it was a first offence, she is pregnant and not an ongoing risk to the public. She pleaded guitly and the prosecution accepted her basis. Reasonable sentence.

    16. Artistic_Data9398 on

Rule 101, don’t be black and country smuggle.

      £250. That’s a madness. I wouldn’t even drive cross county lines for £250 lol

    17. double-happiness on

      > Elsewhere, air stewardess Lee was detained at Colombo airport in Sri Lanka last Monday where police say she had a stash of £1.15million of kush – a synthetic strain of the drug.

How the hell is kush a ’synthetic strain‘?! Garbage-tier journalism.

    18. gravitasmissing on

It’s ridiculous weed is still illegal don’t smoke only ever had the odd joint

    19. It should be made legal [anyway.Like](http://anyway.Like) it is in alot of other places.

Fact is those places where it is legal they have not gone to pot.

You only have to look at the Dutch other 30 years of cannabis use tolerated .

Tis weird how the dutch does not have the reefer madness like we have here thanks to the likes of the sun and the daily fail no killer skunk issues in the Netherlands or Germany or Spain Portugal or Malta or Austria Canada or the 31 states in the USA where its legal or Jamaica now or South Africa where it is legal now.

Just us with our backwards ways. Thanks to the likes of the daily faily the Torygraph or the Sun with their reefer madness lies.

This country is now a country with one rule for some and other rule for others. If you give money to the tory party or Labour tory light now then you can grow .If you dont then you get locked up.

Ok if your GW or Mays hubby or Atkins hubby anyone else its a nice pair of shiney cuffs .

    20. Judge must be a fucking idiot to believe her story. Someone tell me their number so I can sell them a bridge.

    21. NectarineThat5348 on

22 fecking kilos holy moly… so her entire luggage was just weed? Lmfao

    22. Generic-Name03 on

How do these people actually think they’re going to manage to get massive bags of drugs through airport security? Most drugs that get in come in on container ships through ports, or in lorries across the channel, they are either cleverly hidden or customs inspectors are paid to look the other way. Nobody successfully smuggles drugs by bringing a big suitcase through an x ray, you are obviously going to be caught.

And I’m not necessarily having a go at the mules either, who are usually young impressionable people. The manufacturers or runners who transport this stuff and groom people to smuggle it for them are just giving away their product for no reason. Amateurs!

    23. Loose_Cellist9722 on

Well I know what I’m gonna say in court. Didn’t know there was a „I need cash for a house“ get out of jail free law

    24. Like I said in a comment the other day, I have no sympathy for people who smuggle drugs from foreign countries. Throw the book at her and hopefully it will teach her a lesson

    25. Bullinach1nashop on

Outstanding. Glad a just cause is enough to avoid prison. Crimes will be my go to from now on. Need money, rob a bank, cold, steel a coat. Can’t be bothered to walk, take a bike.

    26. ItsDominare on

The typically misleading Mail headline aside – good. Non-violent drug-related first offenses shouldn’t be wasting prison space we haven’t got.

    27. Sea_Valuable_116 on

Didn’t she know weed is readily available pretty much everywhere in the UK?  22kg is quite alot to be smuggling

    28. twinkypie54 on

Damn I didn’t know the drug laws in UK are so lenient. She probably would’ve gotten the death penalty in Singapore.

    29. snakeoildriller on

It’s about time we renamed the Crown Prosecution Service. Suggestions on a postcard please!

    30. Exact_Fruit_7201 on

Interesting no comments trashing her appearance unlike the other two

    31. Chopperpad99 on

Landlords always find some excuse to keep the deposit too! I remember reading that something like 26% of Tory MPs were also landlords, that’s why they rarely made tenants rights any better and sided with the rent raising thiefs, sorry, landlords.

    32. philipwhiuk on

      Post hoc ergo propter hoc.

There’s no evidence she was spared jail as a result of this attempt at sentencing mitigation.

    33. Our bullshit soft-on-criminals judiciary at it again. She needs to be arrested, convicted for lying under oath, and deported – unless she is already a citizen. Staying in the Uk is only for citizens and law abiding migrants. Also even if she was paid tens of thousands of pounds, a house deposit isn’t a good justification for being a drugs mule. And also, just because drugs decriminalisation needs to happen doesn’t mean we should tolerate drugs traffickers. That shit is harmful. While it is illegal, prsecute those who possess, grow, or sell Cannabis. If it ever gets decriminalised, it should still be shunned.

    34. Delicious-Program-50 on

They wouldn’t have let her off if she wasn’t groomed or taken advantage of; this bloody media again probably painting things in a very different light; the fact that she’s a POC doesn’t help either. She was trialled and freed. End of.

    35. WaterMittGas on

Canada? Maybe a rubby dingy from the Netherlands would have been a better idea.

    36. throwedaway19284 on

Oh give it a rest, clearly time to officially legalise weed. Already feels essentially legal anyway

    37. Worried-Might-6355 on

Just legalise it ffs. It’s technically legally available to most people anyway.
