Are you not insured? Doesn’t the self risk just amount to that 300k ?
It may be a little late, but next time look for the big and recognised rentals. You know who they are. (At least I never ran into tricks like this with them so far.)
I have gotten „minor“ damage to my car doors a few times and 300k does not seem out of the question for fixing it properly I’m afraid.
This particular type of damage is a phenomenon in the car rental industry in Iceland, so it’s not something specific to this company or your case. I wouldn’t call it a scam but it can seem very unfair.
It is true that it’s not covered by insurance, and the rental company should have made that very clear when you picked up the car (check your rental agreement also).
You can ask the rental company for an official quote for the costs of the repair (last I knew it was called a CABAS report). Then you can see what the actual costs of repairing the damage is.
However, getting the quote doesn’t necessarily mean that the rental company will actually go through with the repair, they could just keep the car in rotation and take the 300k as compensation for the lost value of the vehicle when they sell it later on (or repair it).
Also, the dent looks very minor and may seem completely ridiculous, but if the door has been damaged by wind force, it is possible that there is more damage that cannot be seen. This particular dent, although small, is just clear evidence that the door has received wind damage.
A door blowing open in the wind exerts a lot of leverage on the hinge and can twist the A-pillar — which is hard to see visually but is an expensive repair.
They will „reserve“ the 300k and then charge you the final amount once the repair is done.
Unless they just charge you and don’t do the repair and just carry on leasing it out with the damages.
