I’m all for good news but Reeves can’t possibly use this to claim she’s delivered on the pre-election growth promise. I’d like to see a full year of growth before we get exited.
I wonder if the Starmer Reeves rift stories will come back around now.

I don’t see that they have done much to really drive growth though.

Am I missing something from the limited number of levers a government really has to drive growth, have they done anything else? They haven’t invested in infrastructure much and that’s usually a good driver.
The stats are only for the period from jan to march before the tarriffs lets see how it is after as i expect it will be much lower as UK exports to the US may fall now that the tariffs are being applied and all the while Energy, water, phone and broadband bills all rose.
Council tax also increased, alongside car tax and TV licences
100k fewer people employed than 12 months ago according to ONS statistics, hardly growth.

When your economy is in the gutter, it is easy to be the fastest growing but the real question is can we catch up and sustain it?
Well as long as you all feel much richer and with better job prospects, and aren’t being misled into believing that a 0.7% rise in GDP actually means something for the average citizen, that’s what matters

Hmmmm yet the gdp per head is plummeting. The raise is in part to the amount of money spent on benfits.
If Starmer were walking on water like Jesus, people were still saying that he does it because he can’t swim.
If you shit the bed the hardest then of course any percentage improvement would be better.
The first 2 quarters of 2024 under the Tories were equally impressive.
I hope this can be sustainable but I don’t remember people creaming themselves over it this time last year.
Step 1: Tank your economy by isolating yourself from the massive trading block on your doorstep.

It’s not sun shine and rises though. The US economy was the envy of the world 18 months ago and that didn’t stop the re-election of Donald Trump.
GDP figures are a waste of time if the people in this country from some of the poorest and deprived communities do not feel like they’re are seeing the benefits of it and soon.
With all due respect, can we not compare ourselves to how much better we are doing compared to others, and compare ourselves to how much more we can improve on compared to other countries. For example, healthcare, homeless etc.

Every day there’s a new story about how the british economy is staring into oblivion, next day it’s the best in the g7.
Don’t worry. This can be spun as something bad…throw in something about Brexit being a disaster as well.
GDP going up is nice for the wealthy. But for the average person no benefit will be felt.
GDP growth is thanks to immigration anyway. Capitalist economies must see big number go up no matter the cost. Even if that cost is the very fabric of the society they are supposed to serve.

Remember when the UK was on the brink of economic oblivion because of Brexit? That was a silly time. Glad we’re passed all that bs.
The problem here is „the economy“ for 99% of people has little reflection on how they experience life. The economy is doing well or growing, has that translated to higher wages? Lower prices? Better living conditions?
Maybe anecdotally a few people will say yes, but for most people they feel no better off than they did 12 months ago, and that’s what the media will pounce on.
This can’t be right. Brexit crippled the economy. We’ve been fucked since we voted leave.
