They should at least negotiate with a temporary lowering of tariffs as a condition of negotiation. That situation will last years in a proper negotiation. In the meantime the situation with the US and Canada will be able to see where we are at.
We should at minimum adjust tariffs to be in line with EU numbers which were arrived at through a logical process, perhaps even adopt their price floor.
This would allow both Chinese and EU EVs to be competitive in our market signaling a detente with one and a rapprochment with the other.
The original tariffs we pursued primarily at the behest of the US admin which we once again got screwed over on, like every time they ask us to go to bat for them.
Let’s actually help our existing agriculture and seafood industry.
We could also work something into the deal like requiring Canadian made EV batteries, input etc.
This doesn’t have to be a sweeping deal, but we should definitely take the opportunity to alleviate external pressures on our economy if possible.
