China and Russia have signed a deal to build a nuclear power plant on the moon, a project that would provide energy for a jointly developed [International Lunar Research Station](https://www.scmp.com/news/china/science/article/3277742/details-chinas-lunar-station-revealed-project-expands-dozen-new-partners?module=inline&pgtype=article) (ILRS), targeted to be up and running by 2036.

A memorandum of cooperation signed by both nations last week laid the groundwork for construction of a lunar reactor, a crucial element to sustain a human presence on the moon – a goal that both China and the United States are separately hoping to achieve.

    2. Nuclear power has been a strength of Russia for a long while now, but I can’t help but doubt Russia’s space program. It was strong in the 00s, but deteriorated massively since.

    3. Kind of weird China would sign with Russia to do this. I’m pretty sure they are more than capable on doing it on their own without an inept Russia being invovled.

    4. So Russia, the country that confidently went to war only for it to turn out all their munitions to be such shit they can’t beat a country 1/5th their size or population and is falling apart, and China, the country that builds infrastructure so poorly that it spawned a brand new word for shitty construction (tofu dregs) are going to jointly build a nuclear reactor on the moon.

Great. Can’t possibly see how this could go wrong.
