Is there a reason why they charged you this much? did you pay the previous insurance as asked?

    2. JustResearchReasons on

It is not a fine, but unpaid insurance premiums. You cannot retroactively cancel it, if you were insured.

Generally speaking, there are three probable explanations: a) you were insured (because the AOK Byern was not informed of you being insured by AOK Niedersachsen) b) you were not insured and the AOK Bayern made a mistake in assumed you were c) you did not pay your full contributions prior to changing insurers.

Addendum: how to proceed depends on what the reason for the owed amount is. The first thing would be to find that out, if you do not know already.

    3. It’s not a fine, it’s missing payments.

Something obviously went wrong in the accounting, so time to pick up that phone.

    4. > I’ve to pay 13382€ to them as fine

It’s not a fine, it’s the money they say you owe them. You need to call them right now, because you missed the deadline in this letter and so they’re going to start legal proceedings against you.

That’s not a fine. That’s what they say you owe in unpaid premiums. As long as you didn’t spend any time uninsured, this should be easy to clear up by calling them.

If I were to guess, it seems when you started your insurance with aok Niedersachsen, they didn’t inform aok Bayern. You might need to talk to both companies to get this cleared up.

Edit to add: have you gotten any other mail from them? The fact that you got this after the due date suggests the letter went to a wrong address first before reaching you.

I do not think that this is a „fine“. This is the sum of your monthly contributions – that you did not pay.

Did you pay your bills with AOK Nds? If so, you should relax BUT **call them** immediately! I guess you will not have to pay this.

They don’t want you no bad! You can just **talk to them**. But if you do not, you will be seized.

    7. Show it to someone in your new AOK office. They will likely provide you with a membership confirmation which you can then in turn send to your old AOK to clarify things. Do not worry too much. You’ll have burocracy to deal with, but won’t have more to pay more than maybe a small administrative fee.

    8. I think you should call (and email as a backup) to AOK and explain everything, seems like there’s been a misunderstanding. You need to describe that you have switched from one AOK to another one and (as far as understand) were paying each month anyway? It’s possible this debt is due to a bureaucratic error, for example: 1) AOK Bayern might not have properly processed their switch to AOK Niedersachsen. 2) There might be missing documentation or deregistration from Bayern. If I were your id also mention explicitly that you didn’t receive any other notification of the debt before, that you see it for the first time. Also ask for a detailed and full breakdown of how this number was calculated.
Also, maybe they’ve missed you’re a student? This also should be as a main reference, this price is ridiculous.
So, just keep calling them until you get at least one call (if I’m not mistaken they register them, so that they see you are reaching out and don’t ignore them), and at the same time search for advice in your university (maybe an international office can recommend what to do, it won’t hurt asking them)
The main this you need to do is to act fast and don’t ignore it!!

    9. What does the rest of the letter say? Aren’t there any details regarding the missing payments? 13382€ for a year is pretty high for a student.

Seems like you got letters before this one („bitten wir Sie deshalb nochmals“ = „Are we asking you again/once more“). I would guess that you have received at least one (more likely two) letter(s) beforehand. Is their claim justified? If not, the time you could have fought this might have passed (I am in no position to give legal advice though). They are also stating that you could also discuss rate pay with them until the 13th. They might still be open to that. If I was you I would look up if my ASTA (-> university) has a legal or financial advice/consultation ASAP. That is usually free. Unfortunately it seems that you let way too much time pass so I am not sure if there is much you can do. You might still try to discuss rate pay with them of course. Best of luck.

As a student you pay about 100-100 EUR monthly for healthcare and another 30-40 for nursing care. The amount then would be enough for 8 years.

Perhaps because you are working, more then 550 EUR a month?

    12. If you have a close friend that speaks german very well, it might be a good idea to have them listen in on your call, just to make sure there are no miscommunications. But you have to make that call TODAY.

    13. Generally they are very cooperative when it comes to installment plans. I have one open with AOK atm as I‘m self employed and had to pay back around 6k. They told me (last month or so) that the open amount needs to be payed off within 2 years of receiving the bill. That is the absolute maximum as there was a change in the law.

    14. Not of much help to you now, OP, but I’ll add this for other users that might come to this thread in the future: Even though AOK branches have a Bundesland in their name, it doesn’t have to be the state where you are living. You can keep your insurance and move to any state in Germany. The only disadvantage is that their offices will be harder to reach.

    15. German here, same thing happened to me when swapping health insurances, they asked me to pay over 4000€ for the last two years.

If you’ve paid your health insurance every month, then this is a mistake on their side. Mine asked me to pay the amount for the time I was insured with the other insurance despite me informing them about the prior health insurance. The communication between the health insurances is sometimes really messed up, and even when you inform them, they might still mess up.

So: call them ASAP, and in case this is just a big misunderstanding, as in my case, tell them to send you a letter that revises this one (and from what it seems the prior one). This way, you have written proof that you don’t have to pay anything anymore. Though, I can’t be sure if only a phone call will be enough in this case since you’ve already missed the second deadline.

Wishing you the best of luck, generally it’s better to call too much than too little to make sure you’re on safe ground. This way, it’s easier to avoid trouble.

    16. This is typical pitfall that destroys lifes in Germany. Reach out to AOK Bayern asap and clarify the situation. This will not go away without action from you.

    17. Send them your proof of coverage with AOK Niedersachse in the period they mentioned.

I was once billed 50k euros by AOK because a previous employer registered me under them although I have always been with Barmer, but this was fixed
