He stood at the podium like a man come to speak a eulogy for the living. Said time was a loan from the dark and you pay it back by dying. Said it would define them, the way a track defines the hoof.

He looked at the front row.

      Said, take off your shoes.

      They laughed. He did not.

Said he wanted to see their feet. Said exposure was the only truth.

And they did. One by one. Like penance.

He walked among them. Silent. Smiling.

      Said, your choices. Your feet.

Then he left. Gleam in his eye.

    3. Fun Fact: The Hateful Eight was plagiarized from „Fair Game“, a 1960 episode of TV western, The Rebel. Plot, situations, even some dialogue.

Three of my friends from film school killed themselves, one in school, one shorty after leaving school, and my friend who was the most talented cinematographer I ever met, who traveled the world and had a career I totally envied, passed last year.

My circle struggled so much, the ones I know in California got hit by the covid lay offs and I could never afford to film my own projects and the work has not come back in my state since the strikes and the outsourcing of shows and movies to cheaper countries.

I never found my circle after school, the only times I was on set on and off for a decade, I was a production assistant and an extra and I sure as shit hope that isn’t what defines me because it was a miserable, cliquey, near-invisible sort of existence.

I love movies and the process of making them but it is so unbelievably fucking hard to get into the industry if you aren’t from a wealthy background and even harder to meet people who have similar tastes and the talent and free time to execute a cohesive vision together.

I’m glad I gave it a shot but the professional film world I know is rife with nepotism, contempt for minorities, and a lack of opportunities for creative expression outside of the corporate media environment.

I hope I can work in the field again but I would definitely be way more careful about who and what I give my time and energy to.
