These remaining vestiges just remind me of the Soviet era. Maybe you like nostalgic things, but I hate them. In my opinion, this is not the real Baku. The real Baku is the old rural courtyard houses located in the villages and the historical heritage sites in the city center like Icherisheher, Sahil, and Nizami.

While commie blocks are not „true“ Baku per se, they still carry a veneer of authenticity that current gentrified downtown no longer possesses. This is how Baku looks like to most of its residents after the historic neighborhood of Sovetski got demolished to imitate Dubai. Even a rundown alleyway included in this album is more „genuine“ than crappy sandstone façades erected on 19th century buildings.

Generally when people talk about this stuff, they are saying that there is architecture which is authentic and architecture which is not. This post suggests that Soviet deprivation and urban decay is a source of authenticity because it reflects peoples‘ social realities.
I think this is true, but it is the wrong kind of authenticity to pursue. The problem with gentrification is not that it stops a place looking like a Soviet shithole, but that it prices ordinary local people and small businesses out of the area. The locals don’t oppose gentrification because they want to live in blocks of concrete flats, but because they can’t afford the modern buildings they are building in their place.

məncə bizə yaşıllaşdırılmış bakı lazımdır, bir növ new york kimi. göydələnlərlə uca şüşə binalar eyni yerdə olacaq, bundan başqa maşınlardan çıxan fossil yanacaqlardan başqa şəhərdə kir olmayacaq. bir də məncə bakı bahalı bir şəhər olmalıdır, baxın biz türkiyənin elədiyi səhvləri təkrarlayırıq, bakıda maximum 1-2 milyon adam olmalıdır, vergiləri artırıb başqa rayonlara investisiyalar qoysaq millət rayonlara köç edər, rayon əhalisi canlanar.
