It’s not just Panama: The United States appears to wants back every military base it has used or helped build up in the past. After asking Panama and Afghanistan for the Canal Zone and Bagram Airfield respectively, the USA is now asking Brazil to give unlimited access to two airstrips on the Atlantic Coast. It seems the United States is interested in increasing its direct presence in the South Atlantic, perhaps for the capability of observing/harassing Russian or Chinese shipping and submarines. Brazilian commentators online have been eyeing the USA request as neo-colonialism, or joking that there will be a coup if the USA does not get its way.
