Last night in Tripoli, Libya, intense fighting broke out after the assassination of Abdel Ghani al-Kikli (known as “Gheniwa”), a powerful militia leader and head of the Stability Support Apparatus (SSA). He was reportedly killed at a facility controlled by the rival 444th Brigade.
The violence quickly spread across the city, especially in the Abu Salim district, with heavy gunfire and explosions continuing into the early hours. At least six people were killed, and many SSA fighters were captured.
In response, the Libyan government declared a state of emergency and urged residents to stay indoors. The UN condemned the use of heavy weapons in residential areas and called for an immediate ceasefire. Schools and public services have been shut down as tensions remain high.
