One of the few remaining former PCs and a longtime cabinet minister.

I wonder if this has to do with the separation talk.

It sort of feels like Alberta elections are coming.

The UCP is in a narrow majority, is pushing a bunch of policy they did not run on, and they don’t want Nenshi in the legislature turning up the heat on them.

Maybe a hot take that will age poorly, but I could see Smith calling a snap election in the fall.

I wasn’t expecting McIver to be the next domino to fall, and certainly not this fast.

I’m not sure if it’s because he wants to take aim for the Speaker position or it’s more bubbling discontent.

EDIT: It’s for Speaker, we can stop with guessing the reason.

The problem with catering to separatists is you end up alienating the side of the caucus that thinks those people are traitors. It’s a very divisive strategy and the UCP does not have a large majority in the legislature.

I’m not sure what Smith’s plan is, but this whole “I’m not taking sides, I’m just making it easier for the separatists to push their agenda” strategy isn’t fooling anyone.

For a sec I read that and thought „wow that was quick, they were just sworn in“ before clocking that this was an Alberta minister lol
