What isn’t clear if this is 30 main line ministers + 10 secretaries of state, or 30 cabinet ministers which includes the secretaries of state. If it’s the former, he is really appointing a 40 person cabinet, because secretaries of state are part of cabinet.

They also said that it’s going to be 50% brand new MPs. They have 22 returning ministers (had 23 plus 1 was defeated), and if they want a 30 person cabinet, that means that at minimum, 7 current cabinet ministers need to be sacked. Assuming he doesn’t try to play semantics with it and claim that people like Anand and Fraser are „new faces“ because they announced retirements then rescinded them, here is the 7 current ministers I pick to be sacked:

      Bill Blair
      Johnathan Wilkinson
      Steven MacKinnon
      Terry Duguid
      Ginette Pettipas Taylor
      David McGuinty
      Kody Blois

One notable thing about this cabinet cycle is how little leaks we’ve gotten. I remember the Trudeau cabinet shuffles and how for several days leading up to the reveal we’d get daily leaks about certain ministers being out, or even revealing specific picks. Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but the lack of leaks to me suggests Carney has a far stronger grasp over the government and caucus. Possibly also indicating an even stronger PMO.

On a sidenote, I really hope François-Philippe Champagne retains his current position. He was probably the single most competent and effective minister during the Trudeau government. I think he deserves an opportunity at Finance, and could contribute a lot in catalyzing investment / addressing the country’s productivity crisis.
