>[Texas](http://advocate.com/texas) [Democratic](http://advocate.com/democratic-party) U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett used her time during a chaotic House Oversight subcommittee hearing on Wednesday to confront what she called “rage-baiting” attacks against [transgender](http://advocate.com/transgender) Americans — and to spotlight the real-life consequences of [Republican](http://advocate.com/republican-party) policies under President [Donald Trump](http://advocate.com/donald-trump).
>“Gutted medical research?” “Trump,” answered National Women’s Law Center President Fatima Goss Graves.
>“Driving us into a recession?” “Trump.”
>“Increasing the cost of everything?” “Trump.”
>“Encouraging an environment of hate and divisiveness?” “Trump.”
>The list went on.
>Crockett also laid out the stakes for families in Republican districts. She cited data showing that more than 600,000 children in committee members’ home states could lose Medicaid under Trump’s proposed budget cuts. That includes 88,000 in Georgia, 368,000 in Missouri, 779,000 in Tennessee, 286,000 in South Carolina, and more than 485,000 in Texas. “These kids are relying on us to do right by them,” she said. “Instead, we’re playing these crazy games because we’re worried about 10 trans folk in college sports.” According to the NCAA, of the more than 500,000 student athletes playing sports, fewer than 10 are [transgender](https://www.advocate.com/transgender?utm_campaign=SmartLinks).
Jasmine Crockett is amazing! I am so glad to finally see a Democrat with a spine and courage, unlike the cowards who have shown they would be okay with us LGBTQIA+ people being eliminated (Tom Suozzi, Seth Moulton, Newsom).
Jasmine Crockett, you are incredible.
They’re withholding $175 million from UPenn over a trans swimmer who graduated in 2022. That money would have gone toward preventing hospital-acquired infections, drug screening against deadly viruses, quantum computing, protections against chemical warfare, and student loan programs.
Christian nationalist mossbacks and snollygosters in their anti-American crusade are trying to turn America into Gilead. They would rather live in a theocracy than in a democracy with their fellow neighbors.
I can’t imagine how anyone would want to be a member of their hateful Christian nationalist religion. If they are the representation of Jesus as Christians, I would want nothing to do with Jesus whatsoever.
Trump won on this issue. Kiss the ring or lose funding, it’s up to you.
So…I agree. But also have serious concerns that people in our party don’t realize why the trans attacks are working so well. If we don’t understand that attacks like these are rooted in a long-seeded economic neglect narrative, then it’s going to be hard to parry them.
Basically, Nixon/Earl Butz killed rural farming America about 50 years ago. Reagan killed the working class and fatally wounded the middle class 40 years ago. Almost every general election since has been defined by the public screaming for change as both parties ignore them–the candidate perceived as more anti-establishment and change-oriented has won every election since the late 80s for a reason other than debatably 2020.
So these people have had their hands in the air waiting for someone to call on them for 40-50 years. At first they looked to us Dems, because this sort of problem is supposed to be in our wheelhouse. But we did nothing, so people got bitter, felt betrayed, and started looking for alternatives. This is my ex-Dem union family members who hated Gore & Kerry, voted for Obama 2008, hated both Obama and Romney, and went straight MAGA after that. There are a lot of people like that.
The reason the social attacks work so well is these people and their economic plights have been utterly ignored for ~2 generations, to the point that the neglect has become a full-blown cultural issue. So when they see the party that’s actively blowing them off so hard it’s offensive give attention to all these other groups…they get bitter. They feel PoC rights got more attention, then gay rights, and now it’s trans rights. So we’re willing to acknowledge & address every issue but theirs, and for them the narrative is „Dems are even helping *those* people over us“.
I grew up working red rustbelt state Dem campaigns as a queer PoC. This decades-long burning, unaddressed issue is a massive anchor around our necks. These burning, unresolved economic issues that have been festering for decades, to the point that they’ve spread out to impact the whole country to varying extents–you have to be in a really rich, out-of-touch bubble to not understand this dynamic, which is why our party spokespeople play as so ludicrously out of touch. Until we acknowledge that legitimate economic grievance and get an actual economic platform unlike our joke platforms for the last ~30+ years, we will have a hell of time parrying these culture war attacks.
Singularity is coming in the form of every post on Reddit being about Jasmine Crockett. The astroturfing is truly insane.
I love Jas. She is a steadfast ally and future leader <3
Only in America
The *sole* value of conservatism is respect for and obedience to [one’s perception of] traditionally established hierarchy, and hierarchy dictates that those on top (in-groups) are rightfully idolized and receive privileges, credibility, and resources, while those on the bottom (out-groups) are demonized/dehumanized and bound by restrictions, scrutiny, and lack of resources.
To them, the second-greatest injustice imaginable is for those [they perceive to be] on the bottom [of social hierarchy] to have access to the rights, credibility, and resources reserved for those on top. The first greatest injustice is for those on top to be bound by the restrictions, scrutiny, and lack of resources reserved for those on the bottom.
It’s transgender people now as it was gay people a decade ago, Black people half a century ago, women a full century ago; conservatives absolutely *need* an underclass [for society] to blame and demonize and dehumanize in order to maintain [their] hierarchy, and *every* *single* *one* of their policies and rhetoric work to do exactly that.
„Know your place“ is their mantra.
Jasmine Crockett is a veritable badass.
Never met a trans that was not a nice person, trump on the other hand, has always been a huge asshole.
I’m not better or worse because of trump and nothing crazy has happened in my life since the inauguration
I’m still a registered republican and I have never understood the GOP obsession with trans people. I work in the medical field I see thousands of people a year and trans people are a very small percentage. They also strike me as people who just want to live their lives the way they want.
Fellow GOP members get over it.
If you turn on AM radio, it’s clear trans people is about the only thing the right can think about. It’s a little surreal, absolute obsession territory. I’m a liberal, leftist, and live in Portland… have several trans friends, but trans is not something I really ever think about. Over on the right it’s seemingly the first thing they think about waking up and the last thing they think about going to bed.
There’s less trans people in America than there are people missing limbs.
The group is so small it really has no power, odds are you don’t even see them in your day to day life unless you live in a very trans friendly area that they move to to escape harassment in the south.
The obsession is insanely weird and probably mostly fueled by republican men ashamed of jerking off to trans porn
She really oughtta kickstart that into a real tabletop game.
If you can’t defend the smallest of your own tribe then the tribe is broken. If you use the smallest and weakest for your own political gain. You’re a monster and nothing great will come from that society.
Absolutely love to hear this woman speak genuine plain intelligent truth and always be able to stay one step ahead of everyone in the room! We need a dozen more of her💙
Conversely the GOP LOVE the trans issue exactly because it is a winner for them with very little downside for them.
The GOP holding the house is to some extent because of their success with this issue.
I wish people would stop putting all blame on Trump, and start blaming the Republican Party that enables him day in and day out. Otherwise, the Party can simply wash their hands of Trump when it’s convenient, and continue dismantling this country under another extreme-right populist figure head.
