The Trump administration has reportedly fired Register of Copyrights Shira Perlmutter, who leads the US Copyright Office, following the office’s choice to release a pre-publication version of its opinion on the fair use status of AI training data that’s made up of copyrighted information.
Representative Joe Morelle, the ranking Democrat of the Committee on House Administration, called her firing an “unprecedented power grab with no legal basis,” linking the firing directly to her report, which he says amounted to her refusing “to rubber-stamp Elon Musk’s efforts to mine troves of copyrighted works to train AI models.”
Among the report’s conclusions is that while the fair use status of AI training “will depend on what works were used, from what source, for what purpose, and with what controls on the outputs—all of which can affect the market.”

I am honestly surprised big content hasn’t come after generative AI over infringement. They are generally hard asses when it comes to infringement and protecting their rights. My cynical assessment is they don’t want to destroy the industry because they want to be able to use these tools to generate content for themselves at the expense of the people they pay now to make that content.
I’m waiting to hear the very poignant question from any of the “journalists” in the White House office; why? Has anybody actually ask that very hard question?

Imagine if someone walked up to a hedge fund as was like „we need your parking lots and your factories to provide our for-profit service to our clients and we need what you own for free and we’re not going to reimburse you, but they’re now ours and we plan to make profit on it by using things that we learned from deep analysis of your machines and what you produce and you don’t have the ability to prevent us in anyway – but your direct competitor will be able to buy what we derive from the licenses we invited ourselves to use because it would not be possible without your parking lots and your factories“
Seems like these AI developers think that because they have donated & lobbied the GOP, that they have the power to claim eminent domain on intellectual property to create a saleable service without providing compensation or recompense for what they’ve already taken.
Sigh. I’m an author, and rushed my project through in Feb when the Doge cuts were first happening, praying they wouldn’t notice and hit the Copyright Office or the Library of Congress. :/ Now both have indeed been noticed and hit, although so far with „just“ firing the heads. I need to speed-deliver my book to the LOC now or else its chances of actually being filed will dwindle to nothing.
Federal workers, I’m so sorry. Unlawful firings were in the basket of three concerns I asked my senators and representatives to fight or since February (the others to preserve the rule of national and international law, and getting Doge out of our private records and systems). They really picked up the mantle and have been on it ever since.
I wonder who paid for this to happen. I’m betting Google/Meta/Oracle/Microsoft are behind this.
