Hrm, yes, with 700,000 net migration a year the real problem is that we are not receiving enough immigrants.
I have two PhD students who recently finished PhDs in a RG uni in UK. Both got research scientist jobs in leading universities. One got a job in the UK and another in R of Ireland. The UK job required the student to shell out £3800 in visa fees for a 3-year work visa for her to join the job and required an extensive visa process. The Irish job had ZERO visa fees. Visa was processed by the university HR in question through a Hosting Agreement path and was done within a week over email. It’s good that the student with the UK job was without family. Else, that was almost the amount payable for each family member who she would want to sponsor.
Honestly, it’s so damn hilarious.
Since the news of Labours white paper being announced which is basically any (non extremist) right wing voters wet dream on immigration. The press has been slamming Labour on immigration from every angle.
Literally the Telegraph has a piece criticising Labours plans as they will ‘damage areas with labour shortages like care’ while at the same time lauding Reforms policy of “net zero migration and banning overseas visas for care”
I’m so despondent at how far down the US Fox News rabbit hole we have fallen. And it will work.
If UK science jobs paid better, fewer skilled British scientists people would feel the need to go and work in finance and the need for immigration would be lower.
Of course the bigwigs fail to mention what everyone you ever speak to in science in the UK would say is the biggest problem… the absolutely shit pay lmao. Yes the field is extremely saturated at entry level regardless of pay, but if people are willing and talented enough to move elsewhere once they have some experience, the low pay and quality of life that comes with that will certainly make them move away or stop them coming here
Expensive visas are not a good deterrent.
Expensive visas basically mean that people with money, the ones who can choose, will avoid that place. While people who are desperate and have no choice, will go for it.
Please decrease the salary requirement so that I can bring my Bangladeshi cousins as chefs and floor mangers
We let in 750, 000 people in one year on.legal visa and we still have labour shortages in the care industry.
I worked in UK and left the country, I wanted to do 10-year multiple entry visa to visit my friends in the future. Cost? 968 gbp. Someone is mad
„Paying the price“? This is literally the point of the policy, to ensure it’s only worth businesses hiring from abroad if it’s worth paying a high premium for the visa.
This is from the Observer though who are more a pressure group than a newspaper. It’s like the anti-Telegraph. They are never going to support any kind of restriction on immigration.
There is a simple solution… get involved – go vote for whichever the best option you think is for you.
Do not get sucked into the nihilist approach (thinking it won’t make a difference) as that is how votes get manipulated – by ensuring low turnout.

Immigration isn’t the real issue, It’s the rich funding these right wing parties, so they can keep picking our pockets….
It’s like a race to the bottom, Fix the things that cause these issues and move on… Nobody wants to work in care because it’s bad pay and conditions for one of the hardest jobs in the country same with childcare… Same with a lot of industries the pay is bad but people make do…. They shouldn’t have to… It shouldn’t be difficult to survive in this country there’s so much opportunity but we need the money to be able to live…
Making it about money is essentially pushing the poor away.
Same for fines to break the law, if there are no other implications, that law is only applicable to the poor
The problem isn’t the amount of immigration, it’s that the *only* tool that the UK seems to have for immigration control is higher fees. Not stricter requirements for work visas re: education or position, not higher language requirements, not higher requirements for spousal visa sponsorships…
Just more fees into the black UKVI shaped hole, and perhaps higher income requirements if we’re feeling really creative.
The issue with this approach is that while it does keep out some people, it also makes moving to the UK uncompetitive for those who you’d want to move here.
Requiring further education for skilled worker visas, for example, would make zero difference to the people you’d want for research jobs, but would impact lower-skilled workers. Hopefully Labour will be more creative than previous governments were.
Immigration, immigration, immigration. Right-wing voters fuel. Without immigration there would be no pot holes, no queues at the GP, everyone had a 200k job, drive 5 cars and would live in Mayfair.
It’s a crazy system that penalises uk residents as well if my wife had married an eu citizen over here with indefinite leave to remain visa she would have been given one free but as I’m a uk citizen we have to pay for it
What price is the UK paying? The VISA application process is managed by a private company in the middle on behalf of the government, many have applications rejected with the fee not refundable, and the reason behind it is to make a profit and companies access to cheap labour and dammed the consequences. And mind you the jobs that they bringing them in for is only because the jobs can’t be outsourced abroad.
It’s illegal asylum seekers people want rid of.

It’ll cost me and my fiance of 8 years the same amount if we want to be together here permanently too. Its ridiculous that as a british citizen i’m forbidden from being with my significant other permanently unless I earn more than $33k a year and then give them 10% of that for the privilege.
If you’re without the option of a company sponsoring you and don’t come from wealth, visa costs are crippling and family-destroying.
The legal route to get into the UK is absolutely ridiculous and almost impossible, whereas the illegal route is rewarded. I’m pretty fed up of seeing money spent on making the legal even more difficult while nothing is being done about the illegal route. The illegal route should be impossible.
