The White House has announced a China trade (war) deal agreement fyi.
Wonder what the spin will be tomorrow.
Because any trade deal worth anything with the US would basically rule out a trade deal with the EU.
A trade deal with the US worth anything major in economic terms would mean reducing our own standards, undercutting our own economy and simultaneously making our main goods incompatible with the EU.
That said, I disagree with him in that it’s not worth its salt politically. Yes, Trump is unpredictable, but Starmer is one of the few who are consistently playing a good game with him. And this was a pretty good deal in terms of getting us moderate benefits without making many concessions.

It is kind of mad we have had several weeks of pretty good news. Good trade deals, interest rates falling, big moves on immigration…
… And the perception and chatter is still *overwhelmingly* negative and critical lol…
Like other comments, whatever the trade deal is worth, Starmer stands out in the west for being able to handle Trump. He’s not kneeling down to suck his dick but still at least creating this impression of UK-US partnership. Making Trump feel like a very special big boy without actually conceding anything or getting us involved in any of the madness.

Agree with Stiglitz that Starmer prostrated himself and fellating dear leader over this deal was a terrible look.
We didn’t even get stuck with any bespoke tariffs aimed at us. As I understand it, we just got the 10% tariff he stuck on everything from everywhere, and the 25% tariffs he put on cars and steel from everywhere.
It sounds like we’ve just sort of negotiated our way down to the lower 10% tariff rate on steel and cars, which isn’t nothing and helps those industries out, but it’s not exactly a seismic shif to anything else.
I’m not even clear what we’ve given up for this either. Lunch with the Kimg and a golf tournament at Turnberry? Something about bioethanol? I don’t think all the details have even been worked out yet, and they rushed out an announcement so Trump could claim a ‚win‘.
Well it’s the give Trump ’nothing as something‘ stratagem that Mexico used to get him to ignore you, it’s not actually meant to be worth anything.
It’s just unfortunate that the same can’t be used by Canada or the EU.
So, according to this article, his criticisms are
1. Trump *might* change his mind later….
So we …should have no US trade deals at all and just accept higher tariffs because he *might* reinstate those higher tariffs at some point in the future…
2. We should have focused on a deal with the EU
So , like we are already are doing and this deal doesn’t prevent us doing……
