So basically, Davies expects the LPC to just give them official party status and expects to have to give up nothing in return? Good luck with that – I hope Carney shuts them down. After all, he’s 2 seats short of a majority and he can just tell any NDP MP that doesn’t like being part of a non official party they are welcome to cross the floor.
In 2015, the BQ had more seats than the NDP do now but were 2 seats short of the 12 threshold, and the NDP (with Davies in a leadership position) opposed giving them party status. In 2019, the Greens had a larger vote share than the NDP did in 2025, and the NDP again vehemently opposed granting them party status. They have no standing to demand this without being called out for being hypocrites.
It’s not going to happen, but this would be a great time to do away with the notion of official party status altogether. The mere fact that a certain number of MPs ally with each other should not give them more power than others, or power over others. All MPs should have equal power, privileges, and resources.
Unfortunately, this seems pretty unlikely (getting party status without quid pro quo that is). The reality is that the Liberals are better off the weaker the NDP is, the Liberals don’t really need the NDP to form government, and Carney is far more ideologically aligned with the Conservatives than he is with the NDP. Unless he was doing it solely for the sake of being conciliatory a la his strategy with PP’s by-election, it’s almost certainly gonna take some quid pro quo. And I hope the NDP agrees to that on some level, because I fear Canada devolving even further into a two party state.
I want to support the NDP but taking a handout from the Libs would have lost me. Fighting back ON YOUR OWN on the other hand will prove to Canada that y’all don’t need the centrists to rebuild the left. Look at all the best parts of being Canadian; the NDP delivered. NDP has some leverage right now, so they should use it. A few small wins just to show some ideological backbone is what’s necessary.
Federal NDP is finished as a party as we know it, IMHO.
Carney will excel as PM and will galvanize this country again. Right of centre moderate conservatives will track back to Liberals in the next 2/3 years.
There is no room for a far left wing party any more and the voting data was very clear.

There is an amusing conundrum here. The NDP nor the LPC have any interest in anything official. There isn’t any interest in even a tacit agreement publicly. That doesn’t mean quid pro quo is off the table privately but you still have to say that it is publicly.
If the Carney Liberals want to make a clear gesture of a changed government style and pivot Canada away from a zero-sum political system, giving the NDP official party status would be a great way to do that.
To be sure, many NDP voters (like me) voted “Not Conservative + Carney Credentials”. But we aren’t necessarily Liberal-by-Default voters.
The NDP is an important part of our national political composition, counter-balancing the tendency of the Liberals to move from Center-to-Right when their hubris exceeds their mandate.
We need more differences from our southern neighbours. We need better relationships between the provinces and the feds. We need more collaboration and less contention.
