Whilst I think it’s definitely true that men’s health is a very poor relative to women’s health when it comes to the NHS, I’ve actually had quite positive experiences with my GP.
Even in my 30s when I had some pretty minor, non-descript pain, the doctors were pretty insistent on a prostate check. But I guess that’s the postcode lottery in effect.

You mean I can have a day out by the sea, enjoy an ice cream and then have someone shove their hand up my arse for free?!
It does feel that men receive much less routine screening (if any). I visited one of these sessions last year. The article is very well written as per my experience. A local session was highlighted to me by a colleague at work who encouraged everyone to pay for a test as it is something he does. It was generally ignored or made fun of. Men are strange creatures when it comes to health and perception of manliness. I was quite happy to go along. It is a blood draw not a physical exam. They are looking for levels of a protein produced by your prostate. It could, among other things signal cancer if it’s elevated. Retesting every couple of years makes it easier to spot an increase of the protein. My levels came back as typical for someone my age so I do not have a story of being saved and that is just fine by me.
