As a Calgarian, I don’t think there’s enough steam for it to amount to much to be honest. I’ve never actually met any of the supposed 30% of the province that wants to separate and I assume the vast majority are almost entirely relegated to rural Alberta or are people who are using the threat of separation to voice their dislike of the federal Liberal etc. (but would almost certainly be against leaving if offered the choice)
At most it’ll be a toothless referendum that just serves to make Danielle Smith look like an idiot again.

Where I like this article is that it provides links to all the issues, allowing for greater in-depth exploration of what is going on in Alberta

This is so damn laughable, she has been pushing for it forever and now she wants to be the hero to save us?
This woman disgusts me.

All the time, businesses will threaten unionizing workers with closing or moving the business. Imagine this on a provincial scale. Obviously this will get tied up court for many years, and spark a massive First Nations resistance which will make pipelines very vulnerable. But what will it do to workers? Tons will lose their jobs and their ability to work in other parts of Canada.
Since Alberta doesn’t have an army, or even a police force, it really doesn’t have any forces to impose it’s will on First Nations or their allies. So the only fast track would be to somehow spark a violent US invasion. That would be terrible for business, kill thousands or millions, and probably be a catalyst for US states separating and or another Civil War.
All that sounds terrible for business. So many companies will leave town, leaving hostile neighbors eager to leverage Alberta’s total lack of ports and rail access. , Obviously Trump would be eager to manipulate the situation to his advantage too, just as he is now by encouraging this.
The whole fiasco will make Brexit look like a Nobel Prize for Economics.
It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Smith and Trump hatched this when she went to Maralago. Not the start of the idea, but pouring gas on the fire. Alberta Republicans are obviously a foreign interference astroturfing ploy, much like the Qonvoy. Really the whole thing is an attempt to gin up Qonvoy 2.0. They lost in democracy, so now they want a revolution. And just like Qonvoy 1, a lot of selfish conservative politicians who should be standing up for Canada are saying to themselves, „Hold on. This disaster might benefit me.“

She’s steering Alberta TOWARDS it. All to placate some far right nuts in her party that could be a risk to her power. And to distract from all her corruption and mismanagement, especially around healthcare. And now these anti-democratic election changes. UCP are more and more like Republicans everyday.

Danielle Smith says she’s not in favor of the separatist movement but is creating all the necessary tools for separatists to take legal action.
I would absolutely love to see a group use these new referendum tools as a protest. Get 175,000 signatures to have a province wide referendum demanding Danielle Smith carry a Ferby with her everywhere she goes.
