I would like to add, the so called „woke“ „far left“ or „identity politics obssessed“ people are not the main problem NDP faces. It’s the old guard, people like Jennifer Howard, Lucy Watson, or Anne McGrath. These people constantly fail upwards, are big sycophants who yes man one another, take loss after loss, and are not held accountable. They are the same people who allowed Jagmeet’s leadership to shit itself and all.
For the purposes of this post, I will also say, Lucy Watson is not a pleasant human being who does not deserve her job. She imposed a candidate in a riding my friend ran the riding association in 2022, and when my friend went against her decision i.e. via local democracy, she threatened to ruin her life and career. She butchered the 2022 Ontario campaign, despite outspending the Tories. She annulled many of our party members‘ democratic decisions cuz it went against her. Her, Anne McGrath, and Jennifer Howard should not be allowed to touch any political party unless the purpose is to ruin it.
Now these same people want to bring in a less democratic, points-based system. The leader I want for this party isn’t just someone on the left or centre, but someone who will burn these people down. For the NDP to truly fix itself, it needs to get rid of deadweight like these people to grow again.
For legal purposes though, I will be alleging the 2nd paragraph though.
my general take on some of the questions raised in this article as an observer and member
1. No short race because we need debate on NDP’s future
2. I’m open to (but not sure of) a points system. The last leader didn’t succeed, and won in part because of concentrated membership signups
3. A higher fee is OK because we need someone who (like Bernie) can raise money
Same voting system as last time which allows for a hell of a lot of ideological dilution. No one has confronted the fact that Singh won on progressive liberal votes from those who, yes, come from all over the country, but do not support the base. As a Toronto leftist, I’m not going to rejoin and take part to whatever extent I can, donating what I have to, if I’m not assured that my vote will have the same value as someone in the rural west just because there’s a higher chance of that rural working class moderate voting NDP rather than Conservative or liberal. Me and my friends are the fucking base, and Carney did more for our vote than Singh.
What I and a voter out west like that have in common is labour rights, and trying to win them by being the softer liberals is how we got here. So 1 vote is 1 vote. People care about policy and authenticity.
It angered me that the last BC NDP leadership race was an acclamation. They disqualified the only opponent. To ensure the party has a future, you need to develop multiple future leaders. You need to ensure every member that gets elected is more than just a warm body that tows the party line. Then they go and embrace the centre and repeat some of the same talking points as the right wing parties do.
