The directors need to be rewarded for spotting that they can potentially solve more problems if water bills are massive and they can con ofwat into agreeing. If they can find a director to take a huge bonus then take a part fine job as ofwat chairman on just £200k, then so much the better for them. They may be able to sell to venture capitalist who can loot the cash now.
£30bn cost to clean up the rivers and water supplies for the whole country – the debt that *just* Thames Water have run up paying dividends is more than half that.
If it wasn’t clear to people it should be blindingly obvious that privatisation hasn’t worked.
Inflation of 3% would take the average bill to about £1300 over 25 years. £2000 is an average of about 5%.
Why the hell are we paying for mismanagement of critical infrastructure by private industry?
Article says it’s £1,000 in real terms. The £2,000 figure factors in projected inflation.
Decades of water companies taking on massive debt only to not spend it investing in water infrastructure, instead using it to enrich themselves. Ofwat failed their job. We now have to pay off that debt and pay for infrastructure on top. Absolutely ridiculous.
If your use is less than 20 cubic metres a day you could drill without a licence in an existing property. Costs between 10k and 20k for a 60m well depending on circumstances.
The privatised gains should be seized and used…it’s always the consumer that gets stuck with the bill after these services have been pilfered. It’s absolutely disgusting.
My water is already 175 a month. We don’t even know why we make a point of not using high amounts of water. Have asked company to look into it but they won’t. This has been going on for 4 years now
It’s around £450 currently, so £2000 in 25 years, isn’t that just inflation?

So where I am it costs about £10k to drill a borehole and fit a pump. If you want potable water the additional treatment facility is another £5k or so.
You can legally abstract 20,000L of water a day from your own borehole.
I think this is going to be the new solar, home owners will look to off grid from water where practical.

from 2024 to 2026 the average increase in price was 27%. This would mean the cost of water and waste services increase at 1% above inflation for 25 years to reach their prediction.
And for what?
For the execs to take home huge bonuses while not giving people clean water (see south west water last year), to dump literal shit in our rivers and sea, and not upgrade the infrastructure
Ofwat, having spent decades being decfactor cheerleaders for the privatised water companies have suddenly found their voice, possibly because, politics.
The current ownership model needs to be ended now starting with Thames Water, then by making life so tough for the others it costs nothing to take them over.
I can quite believe water is going to be expensive because compared with other utilities it is still very cheap. I doubt enough was being raised via water bills to properly fund investment even without the companies lining their managements pockets.
Also, are water meters compulsory yet?
I feel sorry for my fellow country men. I moved away from the UK in 2012 and I pay roughly £6 a month for water.
So for the month of April I paid 468 this year , 339 last year , 303 the year before, 271 the year before that and 261 the year before that. It’s getting kinda crazy

So that’s only 120% increase over 25 years from what I am paying now. Not bad taking inflation into account.
I can’t recommend this without a ton of caveats, but I’ve started paying my water bills by cheque, as it appears that’s the most expensive method for them to process, cos fuck these guys.
Also, after running this through a LLM it also suggested underpaying by 1pence so they have to chase it.

It’s 25 years away of course it’s going to go up.
Found out yesterday that our monthly direct debit to Thames Water is going up by 70%. Cant change supplier so there is nothing we can realistically do about it.
Probably going to stop the direct debit and switch to pay each bill as we get it. That way when this abomination of a company finally collapses under its self inflicted debt they wont have any of my money in their coffers.
Well the pound will have about halved in value by then, so it’s only a doubling of the average water bill, or £1000 if that was the cost today. Still pretty crazy.
Just nationalise them already. Even most Tories agree with this. It can be done for £0 as well, just as they did with Northern Rock. The Supreme Court even sided with the government when the shareholders tried to sue.
This just is not something that should be privatised. Water shouldn’t even be a paid service – just something we get as part of paying taxes.
Every summer there seems to be a hosepipe ban or water shortage despite living on an island surrounded by water where it rains 8 months out of the year.
We should be investing in tech to improve this. There is absolutely no reason we cannot make water supply efficient and cheap if we just do something about it – but we would rather have private companies profit off it than spend money and fix the problem properly
