In other words Smith will plunge Alberta into an entirely unnecessary political crisis which will scare away jobs in the hopes that doing so will prevent the creation of a political rival.
Avoiding a secession crisis is something responsible leaders put effort into, suppressing the creation of new political parties is not.
Her leadership and patriotism are truly unparalleled
So she wants to divide Canada just so she doesn’t split her vote.

Carney will move the same way with her as he will with Trump.
Giving political power to a fringe separatist group in the name of political expediency and then being shocked when it all blows up in your face is a game that apparently never gets old.
Fck that. She doesn’t want her party to have to compete with a fringe party on her right flank, which would be a party fully funded through private dollars. So she’d rather spend a few million in taxpayer money on a separatism referendum. Plus, she’s OK with enabling the damage that will be done by legitimising and amplifying the fringe separatists, which undermines Canadian unity and interests.
So, she’s just coming out and admitting she’s stoking division, weakening Canada, and wasting money in order to protect her own ass. What she’s doing is so incredibly dangerous.
Lowers the bar to get the discussion started and that way pass or fail she can claim plausible deniability.
We aren’t that stupid in the rest of the country.
