      >Jo Grady, the general secretary of the University and College Union, said the report confirmed that universities remained under severe financial stress, with 10,000 jobs disappearing from the sector.

If the Home Office comes after the universities in some dramatic way without alternative funding for them, expect more universities to shed jobs and courses. Cities that are rely on universities like Sheffield, Nottingham will face economic pressure similar to that we saw when coal mines closed down. It will, ironically, most likely bolster Reform’s support as economic conditions in these Northern/Midlands cities deteriorate.

As long as they don’t use taxpayer money to bail out that outdated and broken system. In 2025 universities are like 80% highway robbery

Also news, less people are going to university as the tuition fees are astronomical and the debts a burden

Too many unis with better options such as degree apprenticeships

    5. We will have to wait for the White Paper later this year but something desperately needs to be done. UK Universities and research output is absolutely world-leading and I don’t think most of the public quite grasp how under threat that position currently is. I’ve hopped from working directly in university research to now selling research equipment mostly to universities and I have to say we’re already at a point where I bring foreign reps from the companies we supply for over and they are just stunned, not in a good way, by what they see after doing a bit of a tour here. The Chinese companies in particular we’ve had to give a real good reality check with that despite our position, getting access to big capital funding grants is a total fucking nightmare, and many universities cannot afford to maintain service contracts on the kit they do have. Increasingly they can’t even afford to hire enough staff to actually make best use of the kit, and if they do that staff is often on quite ridiculous temp. contracts so its a headache trying to plan out how we deal with training and expertise long-term when we want to work with our customers to produce application notes and publications.

    6. So there’s direct correlation with those students (ab)using the system to bring their families over after all. Though, outright panic aside, they *only* account for 21%.

Cut off the bottom 50 tbh I genuinely do not see what universities incompetent enough to be the worst out of 150 odd have to offer anyone.

Good. My uni kept harassing me for more money after I’d graduated and paid their fees. Then the story broke that the vice Chancellor was on £468k. Ask her for handouts.

Universities need to be more aggressive around building their endowments and monetising it to fund operations

Universities and so much of that sector has been a huge financial bubble where actual education is second thought and should be the surprise of no one when it collapses.
It’ll be just like all the rest of the financial collapses in the last 20 years with the exact same questions and answers.

I’m still honestly surprised we haven’t had a car financing bubble pop yet.

    11. We just need fewer universities and need to promote more apprenticeships and going straight into the workforce.

There are people in my industry who went straight into workforce and same level as me but currently I’m paying £200-300 per month on post grad and grad loan repayments every month.

I don’t think people appreciate how much unis support entire fucking cities in the UK. Sheffield where I went without both unis would be Blackpool without the ocean.

This is existential shit. It’s one of our biggest exports

A have a relative working at a uni, China has discouraged students from coming to the UK and have levelled up their mainland universities. Loss of revenue from this student group has been brutal for them.

Uni is outdated anyways. Why pay 27k for somethign that you can watch on youtube for free

A few things here that are own goals by the Unis:

      1. Attracting prospective students by offering syllabuses that are then changed, alientating their interests and causing them to lose faith in the institution. Those alienated students then tell their friends and family who start bad mouthing the Uni. Happened to a colleagues son studying History.

      2. Get students back in the damn lecture halls for the duration of the term. My neighbours son and my colleagues son have both finished lectures for this academic year. One doing history the other Programming. There are no more scheduled face to face interactions planned until September..what they hell are they paying their fees for? Stop remote lessons; people are paying for the knowledge but especially the support, guidance and advice offered by the lecturers.

      3. Don’t build a business model thats dependant on overseas students in a climate thats growing ever more hostile towards migrants.

Perhaps it’s time to accept that „levelling up“ the polytechnics into universities was a mistake. We need to revert to both, as not everyone is suited to acedemia and we are crying out for home grown technically skilled individuals.
