The context here is that this is happening because the conservatives lost the federal election…again. They’re just sore losers
Submission statement: Premier Daniel Smith says she will hold a referendum next year on secession from Canada, assuming the petition gets the required signatures. This comes after her government lowered the signature bar to 177k. She said „we don’t want special treatment or handouts, we just want to be free to develop and export our resources“
Personally I think this is a significant threat. Never underestimate pissed off people. For it to get endorsed by the ruling party it has to get bad enough that they think this is needed. Remember no one expected brexit to succeed. And Alberta would be doing this under the Clarity Act using a clear constitutional process.
Wouldn’t it just be easier for her to move south to her whacky promised land?
Encourage people to actually learn about confederation, western separatist movements and the relationship between Alberta and Ottawa over the past 10 years before making ignorant comments here.
