Struggle to find train drivers? I thought they were one of the most applied for jobs in the country?
Where do I apply? I’ve had enough of office work for now I think.
There isn’t a shortage of applicants.
There’s a huge shortage of training spaces, instructors and assessors. The backlog never really recovered since Covid and is being made worse with the amount of retirements coming up within the next few years.
Lowering the age to 18 is pointless, most applicants won’t have the real life experiences such as dealing with emergencies needed to get through the interview stage.
Does that mean that occasionally on the announcement tannoy you’ll hear TikTok videos being endlessly played for about 2 seconds before they’re moved on
For clarification, this is just a dumb joke and I’m actually quite pleased that younger people are able to apply for these roles
This is thier own stupid fault for lack of investment and training since the 90’s.
The wages are pretty shit considering you work unsocial hours too.
I have applied twice over the years for entry level trainee driver positions.
Failed the first one because i’d smoked a spliff 3 or 4 months before i did the piss test (around 2001?) and it was somehow still in my system (trace amount but still failed). Very arbitary and punitive.
The second application around 2005 got a bit further but I withdrew from the onboarding process with Northern Rail (Leeds) myself, some of the „old timers“ were so fucking obnoxious to work and train alongside, i went back on the HGVs, full of nice old timers. The money and hours are better driving HGV too, i just wanted to fulfill a childhood dream of train driving as a career.
I still drive HGV occaisionally and work as a Jukebox tech full time, which doesn’t punish me for my lifestyle choices. I don’t even smoke now but that whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth.

So they’re expecting people who have less than a years experience driving CARS to drive trains? People who could potentially still be in full time education? Ridiculous idea surely, why not just make the working conditions better for the current train drivers to make the job more appealing for people with experience
Don’t get why this is news. They aren’t going to let some untrained fresh out of school 18 year old drive a train any more than a 30 year old or 25 year old. If they have the aptitude to pass the tests and training then they’ll progress to being a driver, idk like every other skilled job in the world. I swear LBC is getting more like the daily mail every day
The way you tackle staff “shortages” is pay more. End of discussion. There isn’t a fucking single “skills shortage” in the world, just rich people wanting the poor to work for nothing

34 and I’m making maybe 45-65k a year in mine, but I wouldn’t mind retraining
Make it harder for 18 year olds to drive a car but make it easier for them to drive a train
It’s incredibly hard to become a train driver, i applied had an assessment and ballsed it up, I can have one more attempt (you’re only allowed 2 ever) i know a few others that have tried smart blokes they got down to the final stage (there’s 5) didnt get it. And that’s before you even start training and there’s no guarantee you will pass that.
Oh and if you fail any stage you don’t get any feed back, don’t get to know your score it’s just you failed bye.
Just have a program drive then instead, they only go one way and many other countries have automatic trains
