The used the boats because we have a good chance at stopping them in the back of vehicles. If they manage to stop the boats they’ll move to shipping containers.

This is why we have border forces.
This was big news back in the 2010’s and was the big driver behind the Brexit campaign. In actual fact this kind of border crossing was much easier to prevent under current laws (which obviously need revising), because the checks happen at the border and they can be prevented entering the UK (even if that’s an internal border like the Channel Tunnel terminus). There’s also very few entry points.
The problem with maritime boundaries are, once they are in your maritime boundary, they are formally in your country under law. That – and us hamstringing ourselves by making it so they could only apply for asylum inside the UK.

This is why we leave the ECHR. Because it will stop them using the “right to family life” article 8. Start refoulment. Only when we remove the incentive, will they stop trying.

Amazing the lengths people will go to so they can’t be tracked by their passports. People pay £5000 to get smuggled in instead of about £20 to do it legally. Weird huh?
