>Negative effects of excessive smartphone use
>Over the past 10 years, numerous scientific articles have been published on the impact of social media and digital technologies on the mental and physical health of children and young people. For example, there is an increase in depression, anxiety disorders, obesity, learning problems and sleep disorders due to smartphone use in young people.
>The experts also notice that. Steven Laureys is a neurologist: “We now know that excessive use of those screens and social media is going to overstimulate our brain and that leads to distraction rather than focus and that can give attention disorders in children.”
>“It can disrupt our sleep and a good quality of sleep is just very important in children. It also has an impact on our emotional networks. We are social animals and the internet and social media can connect, but if it becomes too much virtual, then that is negative again. Children just have to play in the real world with their friends.”
>Neuropsychiatrist Theo Compernolle also supports 100 percent of this initiative: „Children are interrupted by their phone in everything they do. It happens up to 80 times a day. That constantly being interrupted in all activities, you get a ‚cruculling brain‘. As a result, people are no longer able to keep their attention continuously on one task. This is not only about the studies, but also about, for example, enjoying things. You never do that with the full 100 percent.”
The government shouldnt do the job of parents because they will use this opportunity to erode privacy
How would you enforce that.

If only we had a government that truly served the people, I could believe in a policy like this.
Otherwise, I feel like this is just going to be a PATRIOT act style of control on the people.
Meanwhile, across the EU, tobacco taxes generate over €100 billion annually, and Belgium, as a member state, contributes to this… Which percentage I don’t know… Alcohol ? 500 million revenue/year in tax for Belgium .. Before taking measure against smartphones there are more urgent drug issues (tobacco and alcohol) to take care of…
De volgende stap is het verband met pedofilie maken en hoppaaaaaaaa , weer stapje dichter bij 1984
I often envy my father in law. He pretty much uses his smartphone as a phone. I have never seen him doomscrolling or constantly checking his phone for notifications.
They should start banning those in schools and other places where kids go (sport/art/music afterschool activities etc.). Smartphones start being used due to social pressure. If you remove it in school (& co) part of that pressure (not all obviously) goes away.
