A reminder. 5 MPs, 10 councils, 2 Mayors. Outside of 12 local authorities they can do sod all about flags on public buildings.

Probably best to get rid of St George’s cross as well if you are going to go that far. Of course the chances that every single independence party will be against Reform is pretty high, funny seeing the far right fight amongst themselves.

      > He added: „No other flags will be permitted to be flown on flag-poles, balconies, reception desks or council-chamber walls.“

Sounds like some fun opportunities for malicious compliance for council workers with that list…

It kind of shows how through the looking glass we are that we even have to have that rule for institutions for the nation state. What happened to this nation, seriously? Did some of us catch some kind of brain rot?

Yes, really good policy. All those flags that cannot be flown (including, of course, the Welsh flag, the Saltaire, the Royal Standard, etc.) to either be donated to pensioners to keep them warm in the winter, or turned into carrier bags for food banks.

    6. Reform could pledge a million quid in cash for every person who voted for them and it’d be completely meaningless because they haven’t won a general election.

Besides which Farage always cuts and runs just as soon as whatever thing he gets behind gains traction and looks in danger of actually ousting the Conservatives.

So what else is often up there that’s covered by this? I’m guessing LGBT+ pride flags, any others?

      > A row has erupted after Reform UK pledged to ban local authorities from flying any flags aside from the Union Jack or the St George’s Cross in councils they control.

I’m sure that’ll get rid of all the immigrants

    9. A nice reminder that Reform are not serious people.

These are not well-thought out, researched, consulted on policies that they are serious about. These are knee-jerk reactions aimed to punish and exclude people they don’t like, based on their own feelings.

Aside from examples like pride flags and Ukraine flags (which obviously they have ideological opposition to), the most notable exclusion would the the *Royal Standard*. No flying the Royal Standard when the King is visiting…

You can tell they haven’t thought about this as they’ve already walked it back a bit. Zia Yusaf’s original statement only covered the „Union Jack and the St George’s flag“ but a „Reform spokesman“ has since extended this to cover „county flags“ and maybe other flags based on „national heritage.“

I imagine if you asked Yusaf why he hated the King he would also walk it back even further, and say „oh, and Royal flags as well, of course.“

Because they have no clue what they are doing – they have no interest in *governing*, they just want to rule. They want the attention and power.

      > A Reform source said: „The Tories seem more upset about Reform councils flying the union flag than their councils flying the trans flag. It sums up the state of the Tory party, the sooner they’re consigned to the dustbin of history, the better.“

These are not serious people. They should be mocked at every opportunity.

I assume they include Wales and Scotland right? Or was this more of a specific policy based on areas they currently control?

    11. Saint George was born in what is now Turkiye. Surely Reform don’t want a Turkish guy whose never been to Englands, flag flying about?

      That’s woke.
      Did I use that right?

    12. ClubBandage on

Worrying about flags and trans people. Wow. Planning to get rid of net zero. Hmm. They do know that climate change is going to cause an Exodus from Africa in the not too distant future? Love their priorities

    13. Al_Snows_Head on

Ah, yes. That’s what the problem is with this country, is those damn flags.

    14. The problem with banning flags is how do we show solidarity with our international partners? We put up American flags up following 9/11 and did something similar for France during it’s most severe terrorist incident. In more recent years we showed solidarity with Ukraine by putting up Ukraine flags to show support for them.

    15. This will go down well for the Senedd elections they are so insistent they will win…

Well thst seems like entirely useful and reasonable politica and not at all senseless symbolism

This is life when you vote for politicians that get their opinions from the twitter algorithm

My local council on Anglesey did this for the union flag, they refuse to fly it. I believe gwynedd is exactly the same.
Both plaid run councils and have been this way for a long while now too

Is this uk wide? Because there could be some issues in northern Ireland

    20. MidlandPark on

I have no problem with the country’s flags being on display for government buildings, but it why they worrying about banning any? Culture war nonsense

    21. Sparkysparks101 on

This is a good use of council tax funding how?? Potholes? Social Care? Libraries? Public spaces? Nope…. Flags that most people won’t ever see and you know the next will be the WFH “problem”

      Clueless, deluded and stupid
