      Alcatraz was shut down due to soaring costs, according to the Bureau of Prisons.

      This is the dumbest idea I’ve heard today. I can’t fathom how much work and money it would cost to make Alcatraz operational again. It would probably be easier and cheaper to annex Greenland and build New Alcatraz there.

      Trump just makes shit up as he goes along. The National Park Service owns Alcatraz Island. Anyone who has taken the tour there knows that the prison is in poor repair and reopening it would be a nonstarter. He’ll quietly shelve the idea when Congress refuses to budget for it.

So many of his decisions are based off of a nostalgia for the brutality of his youth—not that America isn’t plenty brutal today, but it’s different.       Anyone who has been there is well aware that it is not currently capable of housing anyone. It has not been maintained for living standards. It is also currently a bird sanctuary and tourist attraction, and generates a decent chunk of money around San Francisco.

      As always, wtf. It was too costly to maintain to begin with, a huge reason it was shut down

      Bro is it to late for me to get assigned as the first returnee to alcatraz growing up jn the bay and taking the tour a couple times and loving that failed alcatraz tv show from. The early 2000s. I want to be the guy in chains grinning ear to ear. To realize what a joke this is. Someone explain to trump what crumbling cement looks like and rotten pipes. Hell I’ll be your sean Connery for this.

      The sheer out of dating thinking this man employs is astounding. I’m pretty sure saying let’s reopen Alcatraz is enough to warrant a mental faculty assessment.

      It’s a museum. It’s been run by NPS for decades.

      They used to let tourists experience what it was like to be locked in the cells there but they stopped when the mechanism to open them literally failed, as I recall.

      There’s a national historic site by my house, it used to be a slave plantation. Is Trump gonna ask USDA to get it back up and running? Is he gonna put in working cannons at Fort McHenry?

      Escape from Alcatraz was airing on PBS in Palm Beach shortly before Trump made this decision. Trump is current at Mar a Lago.
