If only there was a way to prevent this horrible tragedy

I was walking down by the canal near me for the first time in a few years and I could really smell the difference. Absolutely rancid.

But as long as those water companies keep donating to the political parties and keep their shareholders happy…

Make water companies, and power companies public again. That way when they perform the way they have been, they’ll be forced to improve as it will reflect horribly on the government in charge and could lead to a potential loss in votes. Right now the system of it being private and ‘haha we might fine you’ puts almost zero pressure on companies to find a solution.

I wish they’d stop calling them spills when it’s on purpose.

I’ve stopped swimming in the sea and lakes. Really annoys me when I think about what things used to be like. Feel like a human right has been taken away.

honestly the ceos of these companies along with the share holders need to be thrown in prison for completely destroying our rivers and bodies of water.

How is sewage ending up in our rivers in the first place?
Is it accidental or intentional?

We’ve got literal s**t being pumped into our rivers and seas, and what are our politicians doing? Arguing about what a woman is as a distraction because actually taking action against the privatised water companies doesn’t serve the interests of the 1%.

Let’s not fine them again because my water bill has gone up this year, presumably, to pay off the last lot.
Let’s nationalise them. It was stupid to privatise stuff where there’s no choice of provider for the customer anyway, but water seems a particularly crazy thing to have under private control.

This is what happens when you make a utility as basic as water privately owned. They scrape away all the money they can into their own pockets and then refuse to invest in infrastructure. How we aren’t all going fucking ballistic over this I have no idea. Labour’s plan in their manifesto to deal with this was to give owners of these companies a smack on the wrist. It’s sort of a microcosm of their entire manifesto, it’s such a benign response to actions that are serious and life-threatening.

Labour intrigued laws last month to jail ceos for illegal sewage spills.
You may think so what but it was the same as food allergens. Manufacturers couldn’t givea damn, Just paid off the dead family. No there’s legislation in place to report allergens and CEOs are criminally responsible. It’s led to a new wave of technology and industry.

Does anyone have a gif of that scene from The Simpsons Movie where the squirrel runs into the lake and comes out with a gagillion eyes?

I hate privatisation of services, but you have to be a moron if you think it’s a good idea to privatise water.

A very easy way to stop this that would cost the Tax payer nothing is simply make the Director / CEO criminal liable for any pollution caused by their company.
I guarantee it will stop overnight.
Of course this will never happen as the CEO’s / Directors, whatever title they go by these days are the same people who donate large amount of monies to whoever is currently in power.
Fines are useless as they just get the customer to pay for them, nationalisation will cost hundreds of millions if not billions and will not fix any of the problems as it is completely reliant on having a competent Government.
That is the thing with nationalisation that so many people forget, it is reliant on the current and every subsequent Government being competent and will always be open to Government Corruption.
Just imagine for a moment if Reform came into power, they would then become responsible of all the Utilities?
Imagine the damage that Liz Trust could of done had the Government been in charge if the Utilities?

Guess what, no one will do anything because we’re all too busy giving social commentary on it. (I am as guilty of doing this)

All it takes is one person to make enough noise and more will follow. Will it make changes happen? Likely not right away but you can do something by informing others about these parasitic companies and how they’re destroying our country.
Last time I went to Scarborough in the 2022 heatwave and swam in the sea I got really ill, same as the others who I was with. Haven’t swam in open water since that.

Is it worse than in the past, or now stuff is monitored and published more so we all know what they’ve been up to all along?
