For the latest episode of *Battlegrounds*, the Right Honorable Boris Johnson, former prime minister of the United Kingdom from 2019 to 2022, joins Hoover Senior Fellow [H.R. McMaster](https://www.hoover.org/profiles/h-r-mcmaster) to discuss the war in Ukraine, British and European politics, and the future of the transatlantic alliance. Reflecting on the special relationship between the US and UK, Johnson offers his thoughts on how the alliance is evolving and the importance of US-UK cooperation in tackling Chinese aggression. Johnson also comments on the broad nature of geostrategic competition with the axis of aggressors North Korea, China, Russia, and Iran. Johnson makes the case for a strong and coordinated international response to Russian aggression and shares his views on why we should continue to care deeply about the outcome of the war in Ukraine.
It makes sense for the US to stay allied with Britian even if we drop the rest of Europe. We are first and foremost a naval power and Britian is the best naval base for controlling The north Atlantic, and has interests of its own in preventing a unified Europe.
And Britian economically needs a new financial block to plug into. Bringing Britian into the NAFTA and CAFTA system would benefit everyone. And the US is a far larger market then the commonwealth britian is trying to form into a trade bloc.
