Was war der Sinn davon?

As an American who lived in Malta for a while that right there is a recorder, used during music class by just about every elementary school student and loathed by parents because of the ear splitting “practicing” the kids have to do. . .

the point is it is a cheap easy enough instrument for kids to play and learn a bit about music.

I only practiced by taking out the long part sticking my finger in the short piece and blowing as hard as I could.
