      The ESA rover cannot get over there fast enough

      It can collect samples from beneath the surface with a 2m drill, and it is especially suited for biological research

      If there were life on Mars in the past some of the longest persisting evidence would be long-chain alkanes, just as today crude oil exists from deposits of organisms from up to hundreds of millions of years in the past. However, these are trace levels and there are non-biological mechanisms of production, this is merely suggestive.
