The article speculates several points. The Western world might no longer consider Turkey a functioning democracy. Turkey’s geopolitical importance might overshadow concerns for democracy. Trump administration might have a favorable view of Erdogan. The West might believe that Imamoglu has no chance against Erdogan.

No one thinks trying to get Turkey back to a more pro-western and less autonomous foreign policy is worth it anymore and trying to revive Turkish democracy isn’t either.

Erdogan is an easy-to-work-with leader if you deal with him with a transactional approach rather than a value-based approach. Supporting the opposition is risky. If the opposition doesn’t win, then you will have antagonized Erdogan. So why care about Turks‘ well being when you can support Erdogan and cultivate a transactional relationship with him? Plus, this is panic time for the EU nowadays. So they aren’t the idealists that they used to be.

Also worth mentioning he pulled that shit one day after having a phone call with Trump, where he endorsed Trump’s Ukraine / Russia deal. Trump later said he’s looking to lift sanctions on f35. I wonder what the two autocrats have exchanged?
