According to a history class I took, that area has a port which can be used for military purposes.

It was a Turkish village named „Erenköy“ but it was determined they wouldn’t be able to continue to live there so they were settled in Καρπασία, in a village named „New Erenköy“. Currently, original Erenköy is used for military purposes with no civilian population.

Went camping at Pomos once, which is right next to it, and ventured towards that area with the SUP one morning. There are huge sea buoys which we didn’t dare go beyond. Last thing we wanted was trouble, but have since wondered how it works marine wise.

Its called **Kokkina**, its an old (and heavily armed) Turkish Exclave which which had heavy TMT resistance against the Cypriot government, the Government heavily attacked it because it was one of the main points of entry for illegally smuggled arms and munitions from Turkey that reached TC militants of TMT (thanks u/Rhomaios for the clarification). Then, Turkey intervened and firebombed the area of Tillyria, which stopped the government attack. After the Turkish invasion the area remained under turkish TMT control so they just de-facto still control it.
Mind you this is an incredibly short and incomplete answer, in reality the answer is way more complicated than what i’ve described.
Hey! I actually served next to it at bases Elexos and Mansoura, both outposts are part of Kato Pyrgos part of Cyprus National Guard.
We call it Kokkivo aka red. I believe there was a village or 2 there . Turks were holding it pretty well against Greek Cypriot side & after the end of war it ended up becoming part of North puppet state.
Right now there are only ruins, some even in Mansoura, and a Turkish military base.
Due to being cut out, they usually have to go through Mansoura but they do sometimes go to Elexos. All the trucks and buses with supplies go through Mansoura as said, I believe they have a 1 month rotation for soldiers there, I don’t know what they are doing there, but I know that they did sneak some balls and tennis rackets a few times.
In addition, they have a celebration once a year were they have like 300 people go that base
It is a military base. Around 70 troops so 2 platoons? It Has a port that supplies the base once a week. It has a helipad that is used when high rank officials come/go or when is an emergency. No helis stay though. They have to come and go. It has fortified positions and around 6-7 sentry positions perimetrically with one guard on each. The mountain side has a lot of entrances like a mine and is speculated that each entrance is connected in some way or another.
Between the Greek-Cypriot sentry points and the Turkish sentry points there are weed plantations. Sounds like science fiction but its not. They gather them in plastic garbage bags.
Besides weed there is a lot of wild life due to the fact that animals like hares feel safe in the zone.
At least it was like that 20 years ago when i had a peek 🙂

I know it’s highly irrelevant but how is that Nicosia district? That’s what Wikipedia claims.. maybe we should correct it. Wouldn’t it be Paphos district?

An [introduction](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kokkina).
They are wasting Turkish taxpayer’s money over there. There is no point keeping this piece of land other than for nationalistic nostalgia.
Funny fact is that the electricity for the military facilities is provided by the Republic of Cyprus – and nobody seems to care.
