In the midst of the armed insurgency by Assad loyalists in western Syria against the new Syrian government, militia affiliated with the new government have committed massacres against the Alawites in the region in retaliation for their past support for the Assad regime resulting in more than a thousand deaths.
O March 8, the European External Action Service [released an official response](https://www.eeas.europa.eu/eeas/spokesperson-statement-latest-developments-syria_en) from the European Union that blamed these attacks on Assad loyalists. This signaled a commitment by the EU to helping Turkey support and consolidate the new Syrian government in spite of these atrocities. The geopolitical realignment of the United States away from Europe and towards Russia under Trump has proved to European leaders the importance of political pragmatism aka realpolitik in securing the best outcome for European interests.
