Von Frankfurt – Passau Hauptstation IS IS ICE 1221 und PASSAU -Hauptstation – Wien, IS ICE 91.

Probably because there is only one eastbound platform long enough ofr an ICE in the station.
You get out of the ICE 1221, it rolls away, ICE 91 rolls in, you get in.
Yeah should work just fine – if DB isn’t messing up – which nobody can guarantee 😉
If so – you just won a nice stay in Passau to explore, as there are 4 more direct trains to Vienna on the same day.
If you book the trip on one ticket, then the worst which could happen is that you have to use the train an hour later (if you miss the connection in Passau).
It is very possible that it is the same train.
But even if not you don’t need to be worried; if you miss the connection you can take any other train.
Normaly db has These Kind of Connections in mind and informs about them.
