The Syrian government and the Kurdish-led SDF have reached a deal to integrate the SDF and its institutions into the Syrian state, according to the Syrian presidency. This agreement, disclosed by presidential adviser Bouthaina Shaaban, followed a meeting with an SDF delegation and aims for full integration across Syria. The SDF, a key US-backed force in fighting ISIS, controls a large area of northeast Syria. As well as numerous oil fields and arable land.
I wonder what this means for the US support of the Kurds. I expect to see the US decide to pull out of Syria if the new government is able to maintain a semblance of stability, and switch to economic and political support rather then military.
But this entirely hinges on how well the integration goes.
I also wonder what Turkey’s response is going to be. They can no longer simply invade Kurdish led territory now.
As a Syrian-American, I can’t believe it. It’s a dream come true. The SDF is completely disbanding and handing over all of the prisons, oil fields, etc. to the central government. The Syrian military is taking command of the east. Syria is once again, a whole country, and the Syrian Jazeera is finally free.
Just a few months ago, this seemed like an endless nightmare. And while things aren’t perfect yet, at least, we are starting to wake up from it.
