Are you sure your tax class is correct? Because that’s just what you’d expect from class 6.

    3. Did you just change jobs? If so, it could be because of different payroll intervals that your former employer hasn’t deregistered you yet, while your new employer has already registered you. In that case, you automatically fall into tax class 6 with the new job.

This is usually corrected with the next payroll.

One thing I would like to add, tax class is only ever a cash flow issue. When you „file“ your taxes for the year, the actual tax you owe is calculated independently of tax class and then you would likely get a refund.

    5. If you have two jobs, the second job will be in tax class 6, which is the highest.

    6. It happened to me the same way because I did not have a Steuernummer yet when I began working. Once you inform your employer your Steuernummer, they should be able to classify you correctly in Steuerklasse 1.

    7. Lots of reasons why you can accidentally be put in tax class 6. I once got a few euros of back pay from a former employer who went bankrupt more than ten years ago, and of course they submitted that to the tax office using the tax class I had back then – which automatically switched me to class 6 at my current job, because that was now of obviously my second job.

Only roughly half of the deductions are taxes, the other half are social security. Which means you get screwed twice over here in Germany: inefficient state collects unreasonable high taxes and even more inefficient social security system picks from your other pocket.

    9. Why do you think your salary tax is more than double? That website is usually only off by a few euros for me
