Although it may be obvious to most of us why a shift to Russia as an economic partner/ally over Europe is a bad idea, I’ve laid out some arguments here. Really happy to hear more takes, too. You’ll have to scroll down–I was pretty angry about the meeting on Friday, and I couldn’t help but lead with my comments on that.
Great work OP but the problem with the approach is that you assume Trump, Vance, and the whole GOP are rational actors. Experts fail to predict Trump and American politics these days because they view it through an academic lens. View it through a media lens and psychological lens, it makes more sense. Trump and the GOP want a deal that makes them look good, they’ve sold their base on the idea that Ukraine and the EU are a part of the globalist order Russia is a good guy and Trump has bad blood with Zelensky because of the Hunter Biden Affair. These folks don’t care about policy, economics, statesmanship or long term planning but about opinion polls.
An aside, but proving my point, Trump is gutting the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) that supports the CHIPs Act which tried to boost American Semi-Conductor Manufacturing because it was associated with Biden. He’s not a statesman, *he’s a celebrity*.
Of course allying with the 2nd largest economic body in the world is better economically than with the 11th largest economy in the world.
However, there are military reasons that allying with Russia would be better, and that should scare the hell out of Europeans.
I’m one of the few in favor of economic trade with Russia. As a neoliberal, we need free trade and no tariffs and Trump is determined to not tariff Russia but actually increase economic cooperation
