    1. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has revealed that Mexico has proposed matching US tariffs on China, in an effort to avoid levies on their own exports. Bessent also urged Canada to follow suit, suggesting a „Fortress North America“ approach to counter Chinese imports. The proposal comes as Mexico and Canada face a March 4 deadline to impose their own tariffs on Chinese goods or face 25% tariffs from the US. Mexico’s offer includes potentially raising tariffs on Chinese cars and auto parts, as well as finished goods, in a bid to cooperate with the US and avoid duties. The development is part of ongoing talks between the US, Mexico, and Canada, with Mexico also cracking down on cheap Asian imports and imposing tariffs on finished clothing from countries without a free trade agreement.

The problem is that no one trusts Trump not to come up with mode demands in a few weeks. Any deal would need to be codified into US legislation in such a way that the President cannot universally violate it.

This is actually a great idea. A Customs Union type deal puts all countries into the same basket, relieving some of the neuroses of this neoisolationist administration. The NAFTA relationship is vital for Cad and Mex’s prosperities.

Once again – somebody in Trump’s admin has an on-paper decent idea (and Bessent is one of the less-dumb members of the Cabinet) but the issue as always is the complete and utter lack of confidence in the man at the top to A) stick to his word and B) implement the idea coherently and competently even if he doesn’t flail for a reason to back out of an agreement

I don’t like that idea as a Canadian. It’s pandering to a mad man.
