What exactly happens in this case then? Japan gets taken over by some other country in a few decades?
Have they tried being less racist and having a greater tolerance for immigrants?
They need a few giga-chads and they will be back on target.
people who opt not to have kids are responding to cultural incentives and making lifestyle decisions. if the local culture makes having a family too stressful fewer people will do it. if other pursuits– travel, hobbies, career– are more appealing in said cultural environment then people will prioritize those over having families. if family activities are not commonplace then having kids will feel like something that shuts you out of certain places and activities, an inconvenience.
all the money in the world can’t change an anti-family cultural environment. having kids in a place like japan where all the job opportunities are located in a few crammed urban centers and social life revolves around adult-only activities sounds exhausting.
Hopefully Japan becomes the prototype for other countries facing a similar dilemma. South Korea has done a good job addressing their issues with birth rates. Maybe some of those policies will translate. But since developed nations have decided that profits are so important, the quality of life needs to improve for the average person tremendously in order to make having a family „worth it“… or even „doable.“ I wish them all the best of luck.
Until their work culture and general xenophobia against non-Japanese changes, their population will continue to decline. 🙁
I know about 2.3M americans that might be looking for a home and jobs…
It’s a easy fix. Make houses max 3 times a normal salary. Housing and high prices is the biggest problems for family
If people have to concentrate on their careers they have no time to have children. It’s that easy. If they have plenty of spare time they have time for families too.
We will get to the point where the population is forced to make children to keep the rat race going. Forced either literally or by raising taxes to even more ridicule amounts and making a „per child tax cut“ programe the only option to live more comfortably.
They are done. They’ve bred themselves out of existence.
100+ hour work week
Cramped living conditions
Multi generation home loans
A culture of extreme work aholics
Xenophobic to the max, no immigration to speak of
No tolerance for work life balance, the Company is everything
No outdoor spaces in the mega cities
Schools are insanely expensive
Constant advertising and entertainment, your never bored enough to find a girlfriend
All of the worlds weird Tentacle stuff at your fingertips
Japan doing everything they can to avoid cultural enrichment.
I think the problem is still the work culture there, if don’t give people enough time to procreate they can’t do it and after that the time to care for the child which currently in Japan is at odds with the working hours
They need to change their sick work culture and misogyny.
Women don’t want as many kids. That’s it, it’s that simple. Of course there are cultural things that affect the amount one way or the other and cultures like Japan’s or South Korea’s are especially bad here with their misogyny and horrible work culture. But ultimately, if women wanted kids, we’d have them.
This inequitable world doesn’t deserve more children born into the maw.
People are reacting accordingly.
Many posters in here sure opinionated despite have never been to Japan or talked to a Japanese person.
