I’ve been talking about this for months, but it seems like an underreported issue. The longer this war goes on, the less likely Ukrainian refugees will want to return home. This would severely undermine Ukraine’s economy and society in the long run, thereby putting it at a risk of further conflicts and Russian interference.
Long story short, I believe a swift end to this war is necessary for Ukraine to retain some attractiveness as a place to rebuild – in an image that Ukrainians themselves would prefer.
The country is at severe risk of losing arguably its most important resource: people.
Most refugees who fled from post-WW2 conflicts like Korea, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Bosnia, Kosovo etc later didn’t come back even long after bullets stopped flying and they settled down in the US, Canada, Australia, EU permanently, so I don’t see why it should be any different now. People point to various polls claiming x % of Ukrainians want to return, but I think this is simply the case of being ashamed to openly admit that they’re not going back.
Which exposes the farce that is nation state concept. When the push comes to shove, 99% of world population would leave their respective countries in sesrch for a better life elsewhere regardless of race, ethnicity and language.
We should focus put our focus on economic, scientific and technological development instead of delusional race/ethnicity superiority.
It will come to a point where European countries will stop renewing the refugee status of Ukrainian refugees in exchange for monetary and development aid. Europe needs Ukraine to be rebuilt and for its political institutions to function.
I think nation states that welcome refugees need to make it a finite offer. Here in Canada, we hemorrhage resources on refugees long after conflicts are over, and it’s not working well for us; we are a nation that thrives on skilled immigrant, not refugees.
I’m sure a lot of Russophiles will use this as a way to criticize Zelensky.
But most of these people have carved out lives for themselves in other countries, going back while you have a nuclear power constantly threatening you is not enticing especially now.
Many EU member states purposed sending them back to fight. Thankfully they abandoned that sadistic idea for the time being.
