SS: A team of Chinese researchers, led by virologist Shi Zhengli, has discovered a new bat coronavirus that poses a potential risk to humans. The virus, identified as a new lineage of the HKU5 coronavirus, can bind to the same human ACE2 receptor used by the virus causing COVID-19, making animal-to-human transmission possible. The discovery was made through research involving bats, and the virus can infect human cells as well as tissue resembling respiratory or intestinal organs. Although the virus has adapted to human ACE2 and could potentially spread through various mammalian species, the researchers caution that the risk of it causing a human outbreak is low, and further monitoring is necessary.
