SS: Chancellor frontrunner Merz and others are signalling an end to Atlanticism and a pivot to European autarky, especially on the files of defence and geopolitics. This would mark the end of the post-Yalta era in which the US was the main security actor in Europe. It would be a big shift toward a geopolitical Europe that uses autonomous hard power in its foreign policy. And it would mean an end to the remaining „frugal“ states and a big leap toward further EU integration, including a Defence Union. Chancellor frontrunner Merz and others are talking about an „Epochenbruch“, a epochal shift.
The Europeans are already arming themselves.
I hope Europe can find unity. It’s going to be a challenge with all the foreign actors sowing discord.
Media are really grasping at every straw to feed this narrative, aren’t they. This guy is about as far away from power as it can get in Germany. I bet there are random politicians all over the world making all kinds of statements. There is no news value to this

While Trump is not at all good, being swift to identify the new reality is good. Europe should not beg America. The post-war era and alliance are over, and Europe is right to move immediately to establish what is next.
No question, Canada wants to be part of that. But I think if we shift the thinking from what power is projected against USSR / Russia expansion westward, as was the catalyst for NATO, to the mission of preserving and strengthening the world’s cluster of liberal democracy, it becomes possible to widen the tent. What could an alliance of strong democracies look like? How much could these democracies isolate the Russia-US axis?
He’s furious that the US isn’t going to be funding their defence anymore, isn’t he.

The entirety of the EU is bolstered by US hard power and the reason no one will step out of line is because they don’t want to have their governments replaced like Australia who tried to disassociate from the US interests.
As long as the US has an iron grip on every corner of every state of the entire planet with unchallengeable militaristic, diplomatic, economic, ideological, technological, cultural and political domination then you can kiss any dream of being self-sufficient from the US is beyond all of our horizons.
What even is this nowadays? Trump coming in and making a few misleading comments now all of a sudden means the most peaceful, stable, educated, productive and powerful massing of humans on Earth is now void?
