Americans have no leverage
The United States wants to break Russia’s alliances with North Korea, China and Iran, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg said at the Munich Security Conference.
He said Moscow has formed alliances with Pyongyang, Tehran and Beijing over the past few years. Kellogg added that it is very important for the U.S. to prevent these alliances from expanding.
Pushing russia in to chinese hands was a long term mistake. No matter what, at the end Russians are christians, blonde and conservative.
Okay, but how?
Hm. Well maybe we should rethink how the US has approached foreign policy for the last 2 generations. Anyone confident that’s going to happen any time soon?
Well I’m only a layman but trying to break apart the alliance of nations directly challenging your world hegemony by not only emboldening their efforts to destroy your world order but also by abandoning your richer and closer and far more reliable allies doesn’t sound like the way to do it.
Well of course it does, but Russia has already repositioned its economy towards the east, after the Biden administration levied every possible sanction, I really wonder what can the US offer to overturn all this.
The totalitarian regimes find common cause. That the US wants to cozy up to a totalitarian regime while breaking with democratic ones, says more about the current US regime than the russian.
It can with Iran.
Russia does not trust Iran nor like Iran but it was pushed into Iran’s orbit as a means of countering Western sanctions. People forget but Russia and it’s satellite Stan countries and Belarus etc are all hostile to Islam. Also Iran is a competitor against Russian energy. Russia has also had good relations with Israel since the 1990s and like 25% of Israelis are Russian and 30% of the Jews in Israel speak Russian with half of those being Russian citizens. It has been rumored Russia has given Israel intelligence on Iranian assets in Syria and elsewhere.
The US under Trump is both pro Russian and Pro Israel and Trump can do something which benefits both countries which is regime change Iran and remove the nuclear threat. Doing this helps Israel and also helps Russia by eliminating Iranian economy as a threat.
My guess is Russia will pull back from Iran in return the US will give Putin whatever he wants in Ukraine and elsewhere in Europe and Israel will sell Russia drones and high tech stuff as they did before and Russia will increase trade of materials and energy to Israel.
The US won’t break Russia’s economic deals with China unless the US removes all sanctions on Russia which would allow it to reengage in trade at a high volume with Europe. Even then China is profitable for Russia.
North Korea is advantageous to Russia as it annoys the Chinese and Americans. Russia won’t abandon North Korea but Trump does not need them to. All Trump needs is another meeting with Kim Jong Un and some sort of „deal“ and he will claim victory.
Trump may actually end up doing Russia’s ideal bidding by eliminating Iran and China in wars that see the mutual destruction of the US thus ensuring only Russia is the last standing major power. Trump is also simultaneously harming the EU and wants to break it up.
Seems like a big wishlist for 4 years in office.
And since Americans are likely to have Trump thrown out of office by 2028/29, it seems highly unlikely that Russia would abandon all its current allies for only a few years with the US.
